I dunno. I've worked in an Indian restaurant for 3 years in high school and college, in the U.S., and they never referred to themselves as asian. (We're pretty close, I babysit for them too, I'd know if they did.)

In fact i'd never heard of that until I saw it on the BBC. I think that cultural difference might be why there's some confusion.

talking about other people especially pertaining to their race is so not funny at all.i know everybody does it but would you want other people making fun of you when you are in their country? coz they can and would not care about it and how you feel.

Yeah it's odd, but people are ignorant. Usually when people say Asian, they actually mean "Oriental".
