  1. It was necessary for our family.   Our son is learning much more at home than he learned at school.  It was not the teachers' fault, it was just the way that our son learns best with individual attention.  He was diagnosed as ADHD but was not qualified for special help in the form of an IEP.

He now has individual attention from two teachers (his stepfather and me) and has an individual education plan that is not restricted by the amount of time and resources that a school could supply.    We have a great source in the form of the internet.

Many people feel that distance learning is the same as homeschooling.  It can work if the student is motivated and the course of study is actually helping them work toward their goals for their lives.   It would not work for our son because it would be much like trying to use the program that did not work for him in the school system.    With our style of homeschooling we can find resources that interest him and appeals to his learning style.

The thing that I feel is necessary is for people to be life long learners.   My education did not end when I graduated from high school over 30 years ago.  As a matter of fact, I learned much more in the years from 18-30 as I did from ages 6-18.

  2. Necessary for what?  Necessary for a good education?  Of course not.  That would mean that anyone who was ever schooled outside of home did not get a good education and there is much evidence to prove that wrong.

If you mean necessary to be considered a good parent, I don't think so.  I think homeschooling is something that has the opportunity to be a valuable experience for kids, but I don't think it's "necessary" in order for a every child to get the fullest learning experiences possible.  Some families are making the better choice for their children by allowing the schools to educate their child.  Parents who would not be willing to make the extra effort to see that their child is exposed to many different types of learning experiences and to research and see what opportunities are available to homeschooling families and make use of those resources, would do much better to allow their child to attend school where the opportunities for learning are sure to be more available.  It's also important as a homeschooling family to make an effort to see that the children have ample social opportunities.  If parents aren't able (or willing) to invest the time to see to their child's homeschooling experience, it would certainly be "necessary" that they (the parents) DO NOT home school.

  3. yes keeps u safer

  4. Homeschool is a FAMILY choice and is not for everyone.

I homeschool my daughter because of her medical history and the problems we've had with the school system to date.

Are there days that I am sorry she is missing being with a roomful of children...Yes. BUT that is only on occasion. The majority of the time I am thankful that I can and do homeschool, particularly when I hear the mouths and language coming from the children  of her grade level. There are also days that I am thankful she was no where near a school when we get reports of LOCKDOWNS and ABUSE on a daily basis.

EX.... my friends daughter was kept at her Elementary School for over 6 HOURS because of rain and lightening (the school went into lockdown mode). All the kids were kept in the cafeteria the entire time and NOONE was allowed to leave( no bathroom, no water, no TALKING).

That is just an example of what some parents and their kids have to go thru daily. But gee we homeschool, so no drama there. :)

  5. It's an interesting question.  Obviously the answer is "no" because there are a tremendous number of successful, happy, productive people who went up through public school.  I often wonder if I would have received a better education if I was home schooled.  And then I realize, hey wait a minute, I *was* home schooled ... after school, in the evenings, and on weekends ... by my parents.  But there is still the question of whether I would been better off if ALL of my education had come from them.  I went to a pretty good public school, so in my case, I think I had the best of both worlds.

  6. I certainly think its necessary to be home school now and days. I remember when I was in school and I don't feel like i got the education I should have in high school because I was distracted and because some of the teacher basically didn't care. I personally plan on having my daughter home schooled when she is older. She is 2 right now and I am just gathering more info and learning more about the whole home schooling process.

Violence is taking over schools and teachers aren't being screened like they should be. Also I don't think I should have to live in a rich neighborhood in order for my child to have a decent education. Good education/teachers should be in EVERY school no matter how good or bad the neighborhood is. I think there is just too much going on and home schooling for me is just a precaution. I plan on having my daughter do alot of social activities outside of home school so she will still be around kids her age.

  7. Its not completly nesscasary. I mean it has up sides like no teasing or bullying but has downs to like not meeting wide ranges of people with different skin colors, ethnicities, cultures, customs, adn beliefs.

  8. For my family, yes.

We live a two-day drive from the closest school so, for me and my siblings, home-education is necessary.

Additionally, I have certain health problems that'd have any prospective boarding school running for the hills at the thought of being responsible for me for 40 weeks of the year, year after year for seven years so, for me, home-education is doubly necessary.

  9. I prefer kids go to a public school. They get a taste of the real world that way.

  10. It's not necessary for everyone to be homeschooled.  It was necessary for me because it allowed me to practice violin as much as I wanted/needed to get into the conservatory of my choice.

It is necessary for some people with health problems.

It is necessary for some people's education because school don't always make the cut.

It is necessary for some families as it gives them more family time.

So no, it's not necessary for everyone to be homeschooled, but it is necessary or some people to be homeschooled.

  11. For Some HomeSchooling May Be A Necessity

Home schooling for some may become a necessity instead of an option. For me, it became an necessity when I found myself in a situation when my son was just six years old.

All through kindergarten my son was missing school constantly. By mid-year in the first grade, we knew we were in trouble. He was constantly sick and missing school. He went from stomach aches, headaches, sinus infections, pneumonia, and later was diagnosed with asthma and was put on breathing treatments three times a day.

The school officials were questioning and threatening me almost daily. I made sure that my son was taken to the doctor EVERY TIME he missed a day of school to be certain I could show proof that my son was indeed sick. During this time, my son was put on home instruction for weeks to a month at a time on several different occasions. During that time, he would get well and be fine. Every time he returned to school, the symptoms and illness returned.

Finally, the doctor determined that there was " something " in the school making him sick. By this time, my son was VERY ill. He was on 11 medications a day and breathing treatments. He had been through numerous testings. The doctor was a pediatrician but also specialized in pulmonology (lung specialist) decided my son had to be permanently removed from school.

Later, we were made aware that the school district where we lived was being sued by the teachers union. Teachers claimed they were forced to quit their jobs due to illness caused by the school. Apparently, the school district had tried to keep the situation quiet, but the local news reported the high school had large amounts of black mold. I decided to speak to the attorney handling the case for the teachers. When I spoke to him, he informed me that yes, the entire school district had been tested. Mold was not only in the high school, but the middle school and elementary schools as well. The answer I had been searching for was finally answered. I then knew the school was making my son ill.

After doing some additional research and talking to various support groups that I found in my area, I learned that mold is an issue in MANY areas throughout the US. Not just public schools but private schools as well. Most school buildings are older ones that may not have been well maintained over the years and small maintenance issues turned into large ones that the schools did not have the funds to fix.

I also learned how a child can attend a school and not be aware there is a mold problem and while some students may experience symptoms, others may not at all. The children who show no signs of illness can be affected by mold and not even know it.

Many school districts are now starting to condemn old school buildings and re-building new ones. Of course, this is not fast enough for the children going to school now.

I live in Ohio, but many other states all over the US are experiencing the same problem. Most school districts that are aware of having a problem will not admit it and will do everything to hide it.

BEWARE OF WHAT THE SCHOOLS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW!!!

It was at that time, back in 2001 that I learned about online charter schools being an option. It saved us! My son is now off of all medications and is well. His rarely has to take any asthma medication. A miracle? Unfortunately it was not a miracle at all.

  12. It is for my son, who is profoundly gifted.  No B&M school will work for him due to his huge spread in grade levels (5th-college) at age 10.

  13. i personally would like to go to a public or private school

  14. For my family completely necessary! For families in very rural areas completely necessary! For everybody no. Some families can't provide a home school education simply because they don't want to invest the time and effort, some have more complicated reasons. Single mothers for instance have a harder time home schooling because they have to work one maybe 2 jobs. There are also many 2 parent families where the parents have to work and do not have the time. As with anything concerning home school it depends on the family and the situation.

Asking is home school is necessary is like asking if bullies are necessary.  You can choose to home school and you can choose to become a bully neither are necessary.
