  1. I see absolutely nothing wrong with women having to cover themselves as long as men are willing to do so.

  2. I do think some women need to cover themselves more often.

  3. the burqa to me symbolizes oppression...  why would a woman be "more comfortable" in 100 degree heat in a black tent?  Because to not do so, or to even have free enough thought to think "this is crazy", means censure (or worse) from the family, society in which they live.

  4. I agree with turquois.

But I love Dear Carlos's answer.

  5. It's only oppression if they're being forced to cover up. Of course it's ok for women to cover up if they want to. It would be cruel and terrible to force women not to wear clothes. But women shouldn't be forced to cover up.

  6. I don't think that they should cover themselfs completely its 2008 and its more natural. Gosh, some people are crazy who cover their whole entire bodies.

  7. They should be allowed to cover themselves if they *want* to.

They also shouldn't be told that their bodies are dirty and must be hidden.

  8. I think female nudity is a terrific thing... and that the only way women can avoid oppression is if they all walk around naked all of the time.... yeah...

  9. Of course its OK.Oppression happens when women disregard the beliefs of others and force their opinions on them.

  10. Depending where you live it is sometimes strange and not socially acceptable to cover themselves which is dumb. Maybe they don't want to show off their body parts?

  11. If you're referring to cultures where they do so then all I can say is who are we to judge? Western nations are such cultural imperialists, we need to get over ourselves. Our values don't reflect universal human values as much as we like to pretend

  12. good question...

  13. It's not about the particular act. Oppression occurs when one group of people forces another group of people to do (or not  do) things. Whether individual  women want to be covered or not, or to what degree, is irrelevant. Oppression exists when there is no choice, when the full range of choices naturally available are denied. Where people are allowed to choose their own clothing without censure or punishment, there is no clothing oppression. Very simple.

  14. Uh, OK OR oppression?

IF a woman wants to completely cover herself (I assume you're not talking about the general idea that we all wear some clothes), then that's her right.

People shouldn't be FORCED to do so.

Whether it's OK or oppression depends entirely on the woman's wishes. Many do like being dealt with as human beings, rather than as flesh.

  15. What do you mean by "o.k."?  If they choose to cover themselves, then there's nothing wrong with it.  However, it is a form of oppression if women are forced to cover a body part when men can leave the same body part uncovered.

  16. It's been my experience that women do tend to hog the covers; but if it's cold I just pull them back over myself and fall asleep again.

  17. I think that women who do not dress conservatively should not complain about the attention they receive from men. There are far too many little girls wearing daisy dukes and tube tops.

  18. i think its fine, why wouldn't it be??? its their body they wanna cover.

  19. Oh yeah.

    Chicks should burn their tops.

Well, SOME chicks should burn their tops...

  20. It's only oppression if she doesn't want to be covered.  If she covers herself willingly, out of modesty, shyness whatever, then that's her choice.  If someone forces her to cover herself then that person is oppressing her right to choose for herself.

  21. they can do whatever they want, it is all about what makes you feel comfortable!

  22. If a woman covers herself because she is more comfortable that way, it is okay. If she covers herself because she will be stoned or set on fire if she doesn't, it is oppression.

  23. once i seen that as an oppression that i hated it so much, which had driven me so much to find what's really the big deal behind those cloths. then i started to realize after a few years that it's the covers that has been protecting them allot, while helping to maintain the society..well, at least a bit. and speaking of that, i had even thought that they're being some kind of cowards who aren't wiling to open themselves and remain defeated by the guys' stare ( i mean like, "why should we scared? it's our right to wear what we want, those guys are the ones that in fault for looking" --ya know all these scripts well). but i was wrong. coz in the end we can't expect every guys to be angels, so it's a good protection, i mean like how many harassments should women face in life before they "win", after many losses for nothing but the harasser's pleasure? if some guys are pigs then there's nothing we can do about it. but of course, speaking of protection, covers only isn't enough unless with good security and attitude.

out of another dissatisfaction towards "why must women cover themselves" , "why woman can't rape man unless with his permission" and "what's with plenty of disturbances, promiscuity, sexual harassments and abuses", it took me a few years of personal studies on genders and society. what had surprised me allot is when I finally could really get the real answer which is the real idea on how men actually look at women, which is so much different than how we look at them! (we don't stare at men as how men stare at us, we don't scrutinize men as how men scrutinize us, we don't look at men as some kind of flowers and..men think of s*x once in every 6 seconds (scientific experimental report's), yeah and why we don't rape men etc.)

plus, covers like that makes life simpler and easier, where even simple clothing can make them feel beautiful as they're easily fulfilled (not defeated). if more women are into that, guess that'd help allot in reducing expenses on fashions which currently is reaching up to $160 billion in U.S.

once those covers really appeal ridiculous to me, making the girls look like bags or something. but now i realized that it's otherwise, as those covers are the one that gives them more value, as they could make themselves the possessor of their own beauty by showing very least of it to the public while keeping the rest for themselves.  it's a joy for true so i can't see if it's really an oppression.

in the end, i can't help it but to find it very ok.

  24. Within all reason, if they want to cover themselves, let them.

Forcing them to cover themselves is oppression.

  25. its ignorance that would make someone think that a covered woman is being oppressed. sadly people take what comes to mind first and judge only by what they see and what they hear in the media.

personally, id say there isnt any reason to think that a woman is being oppressed by how shes covered. some women are more comfortable like that!!
