Do you think it is possible that Aliens could take over or destroy Earth?

Like in War of the Worlds or Fantastic 4? I mean it could happen that we just don't know how far away an alien planet with high intelligence is. And if they are smarter and more dangerous then us it could pose a threat to Earth. What if they have already found us and they are plotting against us as we speak.

The only reason to take over is if there was something here that they didn't have, and needed so badly that they'd travel thousands of years to find it. Unlikely.

If they were of a mind to destroy Earth or at least life on its surface, then they'd have to be so xenophobic that they'd have turned on themselves long ago.

However, if it were to happen, then they could at least keep control by having control of space and being able to drop things on us.

Why would they bother, we are doing a very good job of destroying Earth ourselves.

For a while, it was thought that intelligent life could be as close as 12 light-years away.  Now we are convinced that it is much further out than that (if it exists, of course).

More dangerous than humans? Then how did their own planet survive?

Paranoia (which is what your last sentence talks about) is a human trait.  It is one of the flaws in the way that our brains associate thoughts together -- when they should not be associated.

Sure they could, but if they were really interested in doing so, they probably would've done it before anything evolved here that was capable of defending itself. Unless they specifically seek out technological species.

'Aliens' just in time for 2012! Sure, anything is possible. But a better question is How likely is that? To me it seems very unlikely.

If the stories of ufo sightings are true, then we've been studied for at least the last 50 years. To think they will suddenly swoop down to destroy us in illogical. In fact, its more likely that they would try to prevent us from destroying ourselves.

If the stories of UFO sightings aren't true, then its more likely that any reasonably intelligent lifeforms nearby haven't figured out how to travel any faster than we have. Meaning that they might be aware of us, but can't come visit us.  

The main thing is this. Don't worry about it. No aliens are scheduled to invade before Monday, so DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!
