I am 16. I would like to try to qualify for the US Junior Amateur next June. I usually shoot about 90-95. What are the best ways to go about this goal: Practice techniques, mental game boosters, etc. Next year would be my last year to qualify

thanks

  1. Your best 10 of the last 20 scores would have to be lowered by 11 strokes from where you are now. You must become proficient in every facet of the game to compete. You may also be qualifying on a harder course than the place where your handicap was established. So practice chipping and putting until you have those parts of the game well improved. Then work the short irons. Those three segments will represent 70 % of your score. Finally , practice driving so that you are hitting the fairways consistently. Good Luck!!

  2. Yes, you definitely can.  As a bogie golfer like you, I know that I could take off easily ten to twelve strokes a round just by playing more frequently.  For me the problem is around the green-I only play seven or eight times a year so I have no touch-almost never get up and down in two.  You will have your own particular weaknesses, but daily practice will really help to solve those problems.

getting down those last few strokes will be tough, but if you really commit to it both physically and mentally, you can do it.  I've seen it done (not by me of course lol-I never got better than a 9).  One of my brothers was a 2 at one point and my dad was always a 5 or a 6 for decades.

Ask your pro what he advises you to do.  You may or may not have it in yourself, but it sure is worth the try.

  3. Anything is possible.  But if you shoot 90-95, you're not nearly good enough to play in US Junior Amateur.  Tiger was a scratch golfer when he was 12.  I know several 13 year olds that have kicked my butt on the course as they're close to be scratch golfer.

Suggestion to you, get a different career goal.

  5. Yes!

With practice and determination and a goal, anything is possible.

A day without practice is a day you did not get better.
