  1. For the jumping part of 3-day, or the cross country course, usually you only have the day before or even THAT morning to walk the course. If it's the jumping portion your concerned about, walk it first, then when the comp' starts,  watch a few other riders and try to memorize the little figure 8's and X's and other "shapes" in your mind.

  2. well first of all, if he hasn't been ridden for a while, get on him and just ride. you don't necessarily have to jump. it can be just flat.

    and it depends on the horse on how hard it will be. the courses aren't that confusing unless you're freaking out.

  3. naaah, that's one more fence than a hunter class-I wouldn't worry. At 2'9 it is more fun than calculating, the courses are usually inviting and meant to get some mileage under the horse/rider's belt, they're not going to throw in spreads larger than 3', the course of is naturally going to be less flowing than a hunter course-but you'll get it just fine and it'll be a blast, just remember to try and sloooowww down your thinking-sometimes you need to visualize yourself in your head riding in slow motion-it'll make the whole thing easier and you'll nail the turns and the distances. Think slow,  but come jump-off time, go fast :)

    I'd also reccomend sitting up to your fences, don't be a dead-weight, and a half seat is useful, especially if it's a big ring and there's a long ways until your next fence, but if you need that security then don't be afraid to sit.

    EDIT;

    Adding onto the color idea, most people give names to the fences. For instance "Over the skinny, to the gate, then the purpler combo, to the oxer".. I carry a pad and rewrite the very long courses, or draw them. Also remember you get to walk the course, so that should help significantly. If you're lucky, you'll be able to watch people go before you.

  4. It sounds like your doing a basic show- generally you get the course when your there. usually the class is there divisions long. (one direction, the opposite direction, and a flat class)

    Usually the classes are only 8 jumps, but the pattern is easy to remember.

    However, if it's your horses first time, I suggest putting him in a baby green, or green over fences before throwing him into jumps that around nearing 3ft.

    Rushing your horse could cause psychological problems- AND you don't know how he's going to react to the show grounds.

    good luck though!

  5. can you refraise that in a way we can understand your question?

  6. Have you thought of remembering tricky parts by colour? I sometimes find it easy to remember 'interesting turn', I'll remember when I get to the black jump turn and look for red jump etc.

    For your first show, I'm sure your nerves will ensure your brain is fully alert. Just concentrate and you'll be fine.

    Very best of luck, how exciting.

  7. once at my gymkanna we had a course and i was about to go past one of the most important jumps but i quickly realized and swerved just jumping over it, we came second, =)))

    just memorize it and try doing it twice a day, i had 2 minutes to memorize that 11 jump course;

    gd  luck

  8. well i ride too and when my horse daisy did her first show my trainer didin't tell me it was my horses first show and boy did she freak. my horse daisy was all over the ring.Then she spooked at a dog and took off galloping my helmet slipped off my head and was stuck around my neck so i was choking while she was running.But thats me.I think u will be ok.Some horses get a little nervous because a show is not a routine for them.And they get just as nervous as u do so stay calm.And it shouldn't be hard u can do it just trust your horse.

  9. depends on the horse if it is easy to teach then it might not be that hard but if it is difficult then it might be really hard.

  10. I would first off suggest you ride your horse so it is not hard. The, what I normally do is I get the course and set up little humany jumps in my back yard and just go over them again and again until I remember the course!
