I don't get how a Cuban gets automatic political asylum in the USA just by putting foot on american soil,no matter how they get here or from where. While others who are truly suffering who are in war torn countries, will be killed if they are returned..have to go through h**l to get asylum and are treated like criminals in the process.

Do you think its Fair Cubans get Automatic Political asylum in the USA while others who truly need it don't?Isn't this the Land of equality?

  1. Our immigration policies definitely are not equitable. Like voting procedures, it needs a big over haul!

  2. You know there was a question several days back that went something like.. does the immigration policies create an unfair situation for some immigrants?  and I said potentially yes.  They didnt ask for details.

But this is one of those situations.  Not just Cubans but Haitians and a few others have special consideration.

  3. You raise a good question for which there are neither easy answers nor just one. Cubans (and Haitians and others) are in special circumstances because of the proximity of their border and, of course, our special history with Cuba. And, don't forget, there is inherent unfairness in the Cuban policy--if they set foot on American land, they get asylum; if they're caught at sea, they don't.

It may even be a defensible bureaucratic decision. In other words, by definition, every Cuban who flees may meet the U.S. standards for asylum.

With regards to the answer about Elian: Let's remember the facts. He had parents who were separated or divorced, both of whom loved and adored him and showed it. He left Cuba on a boat in his mother's arms. His mother drowned at sea. Where would you want to go when you are five years old or so and don't have your mother anymore? To a country whose liberty, opportunity, materialism and probably optimism is much greater than yours, or home to your daddy?

The five o'clock on (if memory serves) Sunday morning raid was a tactical maneuver. Thank God it worked without injury, especially to the boy. And, for that matter, thank God that the plane that lifted him off from Homestead Air Force Base arrived in Havana safely.

The tactic was, arguably, reckless. But the strategy, to get the boy back to his father and his homeland, was sound.

  4. I believe that we the US need to stop this bullshit about not normalizing relations with Cuba, we normalized relations with China for crying out loud. I say either we(they?) drink from the same proverbial fountain

  5. Apparently you forgot about Elian Gonzales when Clinton Administration stormed the home of his relatives with big guns to rip the poor frightened boy out of their arms and back to Cuba!

  6. Why not, better than politicians.
