Do you think its offensive when a black person is called high yellow?

i had a coworker call me that-

along with saying i didn't have a lot of hair and i wasn't that pretty-

after my boss said i was very pretty- i had a lot of curly hair- and i was cute-

i thought it was so rude and inconsiderate-

it wouldn't have been nice if i would have commented on her weave which was about the same length as my hair straight to her shoulders- or the fact her skin is very dark-

i didn't say anything rude- but i just thought she was rude for a single mother who is a hairstylist/paralegal/mother of a 17 year old-

  1. where i come from (memphis) thats not a compliment. im not black,so i dont know for sure.. but i've heard that sometimes very dark skinned black people dislike lighter skinned black people. mabey your skin tone makes her feel jealous

  2. Yes it's very offensive, but maybe she was just jealous because you boss said all of those nice things

  3. Sounds like your co-worker has a lot of problems. To say something that petty about you (and I don't even know how blacks feel about the high yellow thing, so I can't comment on that) she has got to have some severe inferiority problems. I hope you aren't working in a salon with her and her attitude. Someone with that much anger towards other people definitly doesn't need to be handling sharp scissors all day. Watch your back, girl. It sounds like she has it in for you.

  4. Not if its her professional/stage name.  Your co-worker should be helped to reasses her career aims, see if you can get her fired.

If she tries to be abusive about your color again, call her Sooty, and ask her how long she has been away from Jamaica.
