There were a lot of reasons, one of which was to attract pissed off clinton supporters, woman and an edge over obama as far as a historic running mate. It is just logic whether you support either party, it was just an all around smart stratigic choice.

yea i do think he did it for and edge because he sounded like every other president being a war hero and everything they only thing that set him apart was his age.  plus i think he think obama has something with that whole change thing so maybe be wanted to have his own little change thing goin on

Yes. Quite simply. If he hadn't chosen a woman, it would have only strengthened the argument that McCain only offers more of the same. But considering Palin's radically conservative views, it's a surprise she's a woman. What woman would give up her own reproductive rights?

Thats not the reason i dont think, but it does give him an edge none the less. The edge is not because Obama is black.  I think he picked a woman because he wants to get a few million Hillary Clinton women to vote for him.

That may have figured into it, but I think it was primarily to win over Hillary's supporters.

It won't work though. Palin is too ideologically different from them. Actually, the choice of Palin has probably helped Hillary's supporters to chose Obama.

I believe that McCain really didn't have a choice if he was going to project any distance for himself from Washington politics as usual. There has been so much emphasis put on diversity in this election that the actual issues have taken a back seat.
