Do you think kids drink too much soda?

Or is it the adults drinking too much soda? We went to National Night Out last night where they serve free food and free water. But there was no soda. So me and my husband got in a discussion about kids drink too much soda so maybe that's why they didn't serve it. But I said, it's not the kid who drinks too much soda, it's the adult who gives the kid soda. Or are the kids buying soda with their own money while they are out? I think a soda once in a while is ok, but when it's your only means of liquid then that's bad. What do you think?

  1. yes

  2. I rarely let my kids drink soda. My oldest is 12. So, I haven't had the issue of them getting while they're out without me.

  3. lol take it from a teen WE LIKE SODA lmao of course  when we get the chance to drink soda well take it lol but i dont know about ur kids tho but it is bad 4 u so yea ill recomend to lay off of it

  4. Kids drink too much soda!!! YES YES YES!

I don't care what adults do with their bodies.  As long as they don't create any health problems for themselves that my tax dollars will have to pay for, I couldn't care less what adults eat or drink.

I DO care about the kids though.  I work in a restaurant, and all of these parents order their 2-10 year olds sodas!  Are you kidding?  When I was that age, I got milk when we went out (while my parents drank beer and coke) and I liked it!  Sugar causes so many problems with teeth and behavior.  My mom worked for a dentist and she saw all of these kids with rotting mouths because of too much soda.  I also saw a documentary on the overdiagnosis of ADD and ADHD, and how sometimes all the parent had to do to curb the ADD tendencies was cut out the soda and sugar (and the caffeine!).

Kids will eat and drink what you let them, and it's really sad to see damage (sometimes irreparable) done to them because of ignorance.

  5. I totally agree!

A small child only drinks what is brought to them, so if you as the adult is practicing the habit of purchasing and/or drinking too many sodas, then they will too.

If the child is out, and has their own money, they most likely are going to  purchase and drink what everyone else is drinking.

Only health conscience people are going to stress the intake of healthy drinks.

  6. I think if a child had a choice between water, tea, etc and soda, they are going to choose the soda.  Therefore it is up to the parents to moderate their intake.  Soda is soooo bad for you.  It offers no nutritional value,  especially to children who are in theprocess of growing.  Drink Water!

  7. I think it comes down to the parents allowing they're kids to drink soda. I just hate seeing kids drinking so much soda, even worse when they're still just toddlers crying for soda, when they shouldn't even know what the heck soda is! some people's eating habits are just gross these days. and its starting to show on they're pyhsical appearance. once in a while is not bad, and it that'll teach kids its ok on occasion

  8. i think soda is really bad at first i love soda and it was the onlything i drink , actually i hate soda bc i start to realize tht it was bad for my body so i promise me to not drink soda and i havent drink soda like more than 1 year and a half im really happy with my decision bc i feel better  !! i think tht most of the ppl depend on the soda for live ...and im 15 years old :)

  9. Kids drink too much soda.  It's available.  Even schools have it in the vending machines.  I've seen parents pour a can of coke into their baby's bottle.

  10. Yeah you're right its both. The kids don't have any control over what they drink. The parents give it to them so its their fault. Their are plenty of other liquids they can have w/out it having to be soda.

  11. I went to National Night Out last night as well, and like you, free food and free bottled water, but no soda. But they were also serving free snow-cones (which is just sugar water) and free chips and hot dogs (neither of which are remotely good for you... nitrates and sodium). I think we, as a society do drink way too much soda, but I don't think that is why they had no soda last night.

  12. of course, i know from firsthand I'm a kid and i drink far to much soda than what is good for me....

  13. My 5 y.o. son is only allowed soda on very rare occasions.  It was the same way with us when we were growing up, and I am very thankful for that, because I think it's why I don't drink soda as an adult.  I doubt we even have any in the house.  My son gets a soda less than once a month.

But that's just what we have become in this society.  I can tell you that as a non soda drinker (I maybe have four a year, and that is only when there is nothing else available), it can be difficult when you are thirsty.  It helps that bottled water is more readily available, but my drink of choice is unsweetened iced tea, and when you go to a vending machine, a ball game, or an amusement park, your options are usually soda, soda, and more soda.  There is usually nothing there for me to drink.  But it's what the vast majority of Americans DO drink, so that is what they offer.

Soda is absolute poison--empty calories, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, phosphoric acid, etc.  There is no reason in the world why a child should be drinking soda on a regular basis.  When children are thirsty, they should be offered healthier options, like water, milk, fruit juice, or vegetable juice.  Soda offers them absolutely nothing.

  14. Sure they do... look at all the lardasses walking around.

Instead of a straw, those people might prefer an IV drip.

  15. yup they do

  16. I think that everyone needs to cut down on it. I agree with how you feel about having it too often. In my house, we have two fridges. One with healthy food in it and one with junk in it. I know this will sound bad but the fridge and pantry with the junk it it has a lock on it, a lock that only me and my husband can open. We usually open it when the kids are home, they can (but not always choose) one soda and one bag of chips. And we sometimes open it after dinner for some ice cream. But junk is restricted in my house. My kids prefer fruits and yogurt to junk and soda anyway.

  17. Yes, I think kids drink too much soda.  It has no nutritional benefit and can lead to obesity, diabetes, and kidney stones.  Once in a blue moon might be okay.

You make a very good point about the parents!  Yes, adults drink too much soda, too, and are to blame when they give it to children.  Even if the kids use "their own money," parents can still set rules about healthful eating and drinking, forbidding the purchase of soda.  I would not necessarily blame parents for soda consumption in older teens, since even the best-reared child can rebel, but children's diets should be guided by parents.

You have a very healthy attitude about childrearing.  Too often, I hear parents complaining about behavior that they, themselves, could have stopped a long time ago.  Parents give into tantrums and then complain that the child is a "brat," or keep soda in the fridge and then complain that children drink too much.  You are right to look at yourself first.  I don't know if you have kids yet, but this is a great trait for a parent.

  18. WHAT IS SODA!

  19. yea kids do :)

  20. ABSOLUTELY!!! My daughter is not allowed to have soda...She is 3 years old and she KNOWS that she is not allowed to drink it! She will tell people who offer it to her that she cant have it. She has recently been allowed to have Sprite on rare occasions like at restaurants that do not offer juice or milk. My husband and i also limit our soda intake and drink mostly water. I agree that parents are responsible for their child's intake of soda as well as other junk food. Nothing gets under my skin like seeing a toddler with a bottle of coke!

  21. I agree that soda is a bad thing to have in your diet. When I was growing up my mum didn't buy or give us soda (it was a treat a gramma's house). And I won't give my children soda regularly like some parents I know. As an adult I don't drink soda all that much either, maybe at a barbecue. Soda just isn't good for the body!
