rape or violence against women in general? Why or why not?

For some reason I'm just not too confident in the power of guns for "self-defense" - and unless a person is going to concealed-carry his/her handgun in public, s/he doesn't even have access to it all the time or in situations where rape or violence can occur.

  1. It may temporarily decrease rates of violence against women, but it may lead men who are inclined to perpetrate these acts to use more violent forms of attacks to subdue a female victim, such as using a firearm against her initially instead of his hands.  This could result in a shootout, almost like that of a gang war.  Those of us who have witnessed this knows that this results in more bad than good.  In many cases, both parties end up severely injured or even killed and sometimes innocent bystanders are harmed.  This would certainly be tragic if this scenario played out in a domestic dispute where there are children present.  They could get caught up in the exchange of gunfire and accidentally get shot.  No matter how good of a shooter you are, if you are in a gun battle with someone, you can still be hurt or killed.  There are many police officers who have been trained to use firearms that have been killed in gun battles, and they wear bulletproof vests.

Also consider that many violent criminals have even attacked police officers knowing that police officers carry guns and other weapons; so, for some criminals a woman carrying a gun may not deter him from trying to harm her.

History has shown that violence breeds more violence.  Still, though, it is up to everyone to make the decision for themselves.

  2. in the hood everyone carries guns and no one is safe. too many people walking around with guns will turn america into the wild west and i think we are past that.

  3. Most people don't realise that the rate of domestic violence between men and women is roughly equal. If no weapon is involved the woman comes off worse; if a weapon is involved the injure level is about equal (see this review by a professor of law http://www.law.fsu.edu/journals/lawrevie...

Arming more women will just mean more dead men. What is that going to achieve, unless you have the idea that men especially deserve to die.

  4. I don't believe in guns as self-defence, either. If anything, I think gun ownership in these instances would only create more problems (i.e. DEATH).

  5. no since all studies have shown that men and women perpurtate violence equally

many studies have shown that women are quicker to use guns, objects etc probably due to lack of strength so it would actually be a bad idea

  6. I agree with ericktravel.

  7. Domestic violence no, because teh people that sty with their partners who are abusive are vulnerable and not thinking straight. They stay wth them because they believe it's normal or they deserve it.

But regarding crime, I'm in two minds. I personally would like one for protectiopn, but if you allowed people to have them then bad people would use that to their advantage nd shoot ordinary people.

  8. Well if the women learn to use it right (like me) it might decrease.... if all these women will actually learn to stand up for themselves maybe there wouldn't be any rape or domestic violence in the first place. And then the only reason some women stay with the man although they are being abused is that either they feel they have done something wrong or they are afraid in general to be alone. And then you have those ones that think its not going to happen to them.....but....what can you say....

  9. putting away the purpetrators  would make a big difference.A woman owning a gun.Im for it but......a man can always turn the gun against her,if she doesn't handle it right.Any man low enough to do the things some of them do is low enough to turn the gun against her and still hurt her.And with some of the laws the way they are.She would have to fight hard to prove self defence.
