  1. Interesting question.. i guess the only way for you to get answer is to get 2billion people to answer this post ya?

Let me add a few of my comment onto this issue.

I believe there are a large number of people who have coconut and meat based dishes. I for one, who's come from Singapore know that a lot of people here enjoy the Beef Rendang dish.

In fact, many of the curry dishes cooked in South East Asia incorporate coconut into their cooking in the form of "Santan" - Coconut Milk. This adds a rich creamy texture to the dish as well as much more cholesterols.

People in India eat a lot of curry, and a lot of of these curry dishes will have some form of coconut in them. Although they are mostly hindu's and hence they don't eat beef, but they still have chicken, fish and mutton curry too!!! So they will have meat and coconut dishes, but maybe not specifically beef and coconut dishes. And if you take into account that probably half the population there are vegetarians, then maybe you could say about .7b people there eat some form of meat and coconut dish.

Then you have the people in China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore (but a bit small haha), Philipines, where you can easily find dishes which have coconut (in one form or another) in them.

However, not only SEA countries have coconut in their food, look at one of my favourite dishes from Gordon Ramsey below, where he cook mussels with coconut milk. very yummy!!

So I think is very easy to get 2b people that eat some form of meat and coconut dish, but how to prove, I also don't know. But i believe got that many people out there.

    thankyou.

    Beefrendang

  2. nice... beef rendag with some rice and sambal badjak.. atjar tjoempoer.. if not 2 billion people do eat this already they sure should!

  3. India is a country of 1.1 billion people. India is also a country which is surrounded by water from three sides, therefore making it a coastal country on three sides. The staple diet of people around the coast is in basically, fish, rice and coconut. The population of India is concentrated along the coasts and therefore in all fairness atleast 2/3 live around it and enjoy the fruits of the land and water. This would sum up around nearly 733million people who rely on coconut fish and rice only from India. One should also note that the coastal region in India was dominated by the Portugues and the dutch and therefore there is alot of European coconut influence in the food.

The same also applies to Srilanka which was ruled predominantly by the protuguese, Dutch and the British and the country, being an island nation of 20 million population depend on coconut based food.

The country of Indonesia with a population of 235 million depend on coastal propduction and coconuts form a major influence.

Coming to the Philippine Islands. The country is made of up 7700 islands and therefore there is alot of coconut influence in the cuisiLet's not forget the southern coast of China which draws it's influence from Malay, singaporean taiwanese and other surrounding areas depend heavily on coconut and coconut based products.

Taking these very few Asian countries the figure of 2 billion is highly achievable. We still need to take into account Southern America especially Brazil and Argentina and let's not forget African Coastal countries and the Central American and Carribean ones..... 2 billion is definitely achieved.

Rendang, is a nice curry full of flavour, totally enhanced with jasmine flavoured rice!

  4. Hello Shopgeo,

This is indeed an interesting question. Rendanglover is somewhat right when he says that we can never find out unless we ask 2 billion people.

I however do not think that all of China eats coconut based meat dishes. See, China is a relly big country as I am sure you aer aware of. Therefore it has many, completely different cuisines - some of the more famous ones are Cantonese, Fujian, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shandong. And as far as I know, coconut is not big in any one of these. If I can call myself a traveler, I have visited China and Asia as a whole a good number of times, have tried alot of different dishes. Very few of the Chinese ones have coco as an ingredient. It is completely opposite in South East Aisa though, where coconut is an important ingredient in the traditional cuisine.

So after, my long mumbling, the answer to your question is - I know certainly know, but I am inclined to say that although a lot of cuisines and people may eat these kind of dishes, you will not probably get 2 billion of them.
