Do you think most people know what a sentence is?

I'm not trying to be stuck up, really. But do you think that the majority of people online know that a period needs to separate two complete thoughts when there is no semicolon or coordinating conjunction? For example, I always see this comma splice structure:

I hate apples, they are gross. Notice the comma?

NO!  Have you noticed how they do not use proper capitalization either?  Both things drive me crazy, as I used to work and do formal letters all the time.
