My chicken was attacked by my dog today, a great deal of her back feathers near her neck were torn out, and she was bleeding a great deal from the area. I tried to nudge her out of where she was hiding, but she kept put, I even tried to get her to come out by guiding her out using her favorite food as a lour, I ended up picking her up and putting her in the coop. She ran over to the water, and seemed okay. But at night, when all the other chickens had already retired to the coop, she was laying down on the floor under the coop. I picked her up and placed her in the coop, but she seemed very unwell.. Do you think she could live? Also, if she does live, how long will it take for her feathers to come back?

  1. Can you take her to a vet. If you love your chicken rake it to the vet. it will live. Keep me posted on what happens k

  2. Thats so sad! :(

I had a hen that was attacked by a dog once. She had a huge gash on her back, like yours. My mom put neosporin on it, put her in her coop, and let her be.  She died during the night. I think the trauma and her age is what got her. She was pretty old. I would take her to the vet. I wish I could have taken my chicken. Being 10 years old, I couldn't do much about it, my mom wouldn't take me.

I think she has a chance. Please, take her to a vet if you can. I hope she pulls through!

  3. Oh my goodness! This sounds so serious. :[

Take the chicken to the vet ASAP!

please as soon as you can..

the bird will need as much help and treatment as it can get.

It might be infected though, by the bite n all. So take him/her to the vet really quickly!

Hope he or she will survive! Best of luck and hope I helped!<3

  4. In three day your chicken will die.

  5. Unfortunately I think your chicken will die I had a mouse once that was grabbed by a cat and it was acting similiar to your chicken and then the next day I found it dead.

  6. First off: Get the book "The Chicken Health Handbook." While this is a nice place, the chances that a minute after you post your question that the perfect person will come along and give you the perfect answer is very slim. So much easier to open the book and skim the Table of Contents!

Now... the hen will live or she won't. Mostly, they don't, I'm sorry to say. If you have taken her to a vet by now and has been sewn up and is now on antibiotics, perhaps she will have a better chance.

But, let's get to the part about the dog attacking your hen.

    1) If your hen was in your yard and the dog was not yours, got into your yard, you live in California, and you know who owns the dog, then the owner of the dog is completely responsible for any money you spend trying to save the bird, or the value of the bird (probably $15 if she is a laying hen, $25 if she is a show bird, perhaps $50 or more if she is a champion, but you'd have to prove it).

    2) If your livestock is on your property and someone's loose dog comes onto your property and threatens your livestock, in most states you have the absolute right to shoot the dog (sounds harsh, I know, but remember, your hen just might die)

    3) If your hen was in your yard, loose, and it was your dog.... well, that is why my birds never free range.

    4) If it you hen was on your property, but you have no fence, you need to get one and make it secure.

    Best of luck

  7. It sounds like it could be serious. So sorry for your situation.

Did you check her neck over well to see where the blood was coming from?

If she had pin feathers and they were broken, they can bleed a great deal. More than likely, her skin was torn. She could have a great deal of damage done here.

You worry about infection with an open wound. Also she could have a broken bone(s) or some nerve damage. I think this because of her desire to remain on the ground.

It is hard to say for sure. You can always take her to the vet and have her checked over. If it is that serious, humane euthanasia might need to be considered.

Best of luck with her, hope she pulls through!

  8. unfortunately it sounds like it'll be a gonna :[

We had a load of chickens, about 15 and they got attacked by a dog living over at our neighbors All but 3 died and those 3 were some how at the front of our house (the others at the back) it was horrible for me as i was very young and loved chickens.

  9. I had a rooster attacked by a dog last year. I took him to the vet and they told me to put neosporin on the bites and to keep him up. They also gave him a shot.

I would take her to the vet, if you can find one. Some vets will not see chickens. The only reason mine looked at my chicken was because he was attacked by the dog.

I had a hen this year that was attacked by another dog. She lost a lot of feathers on her back and I was not sure how bad she was hurt. I cleaned her wounds for a few days with beta-dine and saline and then put neosporin on her wounds as well. Her feathers are growing back, she has been in a pin with two other hens for the past three months since the attack. I did put a rooster with her for awhile. She and the other two hens had 16 babies total. She chased them out of the pen and now she is on some more eggs that will be hatching soon.

Do not give up on your hen. Just keep her separated for awhile, keep her wounds clean, and put neosporin on the cuts. Good luck and hopefully she will be like my hen. (My vet was out of town when she was attacked, and no other vet would see her)
