Question:

Do you think my sister will be able to deliver vaginally with her being so small?

She is so short --- 4'11 (My 7 year old son is almost as tall as she is) Before she got pregnant she weighed 96 pounds but she weighs about 120 now.

She is just small, I know there are so many skinny, small women that delivers naturally but do you think with someone being so small do they have problems in giving birth naturally? (I think she will have to have a c-section but that is just me)

What do you all think?

  1. No.

    Unless her baby is big..

  2. I am very small too, only 5ft in height and i have had two straightforward vaginal births. If mum is small then doubt baby will be very big. Unless dad is huge. Midwife will be feeling baby and if she is concerned or measuring alot bigger then she will be scanned and then it would be up to doctors to decide how she will deliver.

  3. Only if the baby is big!

  4. i dont know what to think

  5. I am not short, but small framed (>100lbs), I had all 4 of mine naturally. My grandmother was about 4'8 and about 100lbs and she was able to birth naturally as well. Please keep in mind a woman's body is made for such, tell her to talk to her doctor about any concerns she may have about it. He/She should be able to give you the answers you're looking for! Good Luck & Congrats to Sis!

  6. I would say it's possible though she does sound pretty petite. Her outer body though says nothing about the size of her pelvis, vaginal canal, etc.

Birth is a funny thing. Some 100 pound women can deliver nine pound babies while some 300 pound women can't deliver six pound babies.

  7. my sister gave birth last night to her first  yay, shes just over 5 feet and baby was 9lb 2. my sister got 1 stitch. your sister should be fine. my grandmother, is 5ft flat, and her 4th baby was 13lb. go nanna. its about proportions

  8. Unless her baby is really large, she shouldn't have a problem.  But her doctor's really the one who'll be able to say one way or the other.

  9. What do her doctors say?

My mother weighs 90lbs on a good day... 5'0 and had 4 children naturally (3 at term).

She shouldn't worry, plenty of woman smaller than her having babies all the time!

  10. I'm not sure but I am 4'11" also and weighed 98 before I got pregnant and now weigh about 115 at 21 weeks.. My mom was about the same height and weight before she got pregnant with my brother. She gained a lot of weight but gave birth to him naturally. She actually gave birth to all 3 of us naturally so yes it is possible. Height really shouldn't have much to do with it.. I guess it depends on 1) How big the baby gets and 2) That there are no complications.. Good luck!

  11. my best friend is very petite too. she's had two kids.

The first was emergency C section cause the babies heartbeat started slowing and she hadn't dilated enough.

The second was a totally natural shebang. it popped right outta there and she was home a couple of hours later.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that the world is used to small people. She's got as much of a chance as any person. it depends on the baby too. if it's a bigg'un then it's more likely to be difficult.

it is best to ask doctors and stuff though.

  12. It all depends on how big the baby is measuring.  I not a big girl either and my 3rd son was 9 lbs. 12 1/2 oz. and 22 1/2 in. long and I delivered him naturally.

Best of luck to your sister and you too Auntie!  :-)

  13. no i don't think she will. She has as good a chance as anyone. I know two girls that are that small if not smaller and both delived 9+ pound babies without complications!

  14. her outside body size has nothing to do with it at all. i am 4 11 too and just delivered a baby. it is the pelvic to baby size. some people have an uncompatable pelvis to baby size. some peoples pelvises are not big enough to deliver a baby, or the baby may be way too big in some cases, but outside appearance has nothing to do with the pelvic bone structure inside. only a doctor can tell. and there is usualy NO problem with this, it is not common to have too small of a pelvis, more commonly people have big babies, but usualy they still deliver vaginaly.

  15. My mom was about 5'2 with an extremely small frame/bone structure. She was about 90lbs when she got pregnant and she delivered an 8lbs baby naturally with no complications. Every woman is different but despite what people think small women can and do have babies naturally!

  16. the question isnt what we think.....what does her doctor think??

  17. body size has nothing to do with the ability to bear children vaginally. my grandmother is 4'7" (asian) and she had my mother fine.  of course these days doctors are very induction/c-section happy and they look for any reason to do something more invasive because they get paid more. so it is very likely that she will get a c-section because her doctor will be more than willing to get paid that extra money to perform an unnecessary surgery. for her sake i hope not tho.

  18. Trust me...her outside anatomy doesn't have anything to do with it.  I have hips for DAYS and nobody can accuse me of being small or frail; but I had to have a C-section because my pelvis was too narrow for the baby to pass through.  It's all about her pelvic structure...and her doctor will know all that by the time your sister's ready to have the baby.  Hope this helped.

  19. i was 4'11

when  b4 i got prego i weigh the same

i gained up to 25 lbs

    i delivered my son naturally

    of course with drugs :)

its all up to her or her doc

oh ya my son weighed 8lb 5oz

and i was a week early

  20. Height isn't so much of a problem when it comes to vaginal delivery.

What matters is the size of her hips. If she is short, then the baby will most likely be too, so it will fit, but if her hips are too narrow then the baby will not be able to fit and then a cesarean is necessary

  21. my sister in law was 5'1" and weighed 114lbs when she was 9mos pg, she pushed out a 8.3lb baby.

our bodies are designed for giving birth

  22. No lol, only problem is if its an extreamly big baby, normally they follow the mum and dads birth weights tho

  23. Probably, if the baby is in position and everything there is a good chance of it. Maybe she will have to have a c-section, though, might also depend on the size of her baby.

  24. if she gave brith to her son naturally then she shouldnt have a problem but her doctor would know that.
