Complicated. In Britain they're more or less illegal so a shooting in the street makes national headlines. That's a good thing (I mean in this context - every shooting is tragic obviously). But you said "our society" and by that I presume you would include the military. So relatively gun-free Britain is as heavily armed as the next of them - a nuclear power. Most people, I suspect, would like to see a world rid of guns and weapons altogether. That's in the hands of our children so the debate moves on to education.

A society that is not armed is a society that is control ed. You have to remember just because someone owns a gun does not mean they are criminal or violent. If there were no guns every state would be at war because there is always someone willing to try to take awat your freedoms

Yes, starting with whatever you have stashed in your own home to fight off the intruder who can get past the locks or through the window, be it mace spray, a fireplace poker or a baseball bat.  Animals have weapons to fight off predators too, their claws and teeth and the noises they make.  There is no reason to feel guilty because you have enough intelligence to know that screaming and fingernails is not enough to fight off a crazed doper who needs money.

We certainly have less need that there are weapons available.  The fact is that guns are legal in this country and will remain so for some time to come.  The real problem is how to reduce illegal use of guns without outlawing them all togeather.

Humans are violent no matter what the weapon. Many wars were fought with other weapons.

If we became a peaceful society, then we would never need weapons but we're a long way from that point yet.

Guns don't hurt people. People hurt people. We need a better way to keep guns out of the wrong hands though. If guns were illegal criminals would still have guns. Have we stopped illegal drugs?

No, I don't think we do. Besides if you need them, just ask your neighbor Osama. If he thinks your worthy he'll lend you some guns. Otherwise all the cops will have to rely on scorching hot coffee and dangerous donuts. Then when the terrible terrorists arrive, Hillary will have to stop them with peace talk. Something like, "watch out I've got the rolling pin in hand". Then will see for sure if restricting guns was such a good idea.

Because let's look at England. There people can' t own guns if some one where to brake into there house they couldent do anything, especially if the guy who brakes in has a gun. It's nice to know if you see cops flashlights in the field next to your house that you have a gun not to use but more of a threat against the robber. And let's put into perspective that theres another depression (Which is unlikely) you'd have to get food and the only way to do that after the stores are empty would be to hunt it. Try hunting a Moose or a buck with a knife.

Yes. Our society is a jungle and it is not getting any better. As we become more and more over populated, and breed more and more poor people, we will need to defend ourselves more and more. Sad but true. And the police are more interested in pot smokers and drinking drivers than they are with murderers and rapists. They have become an irrelevant fund raising branch of government. Survival is up to each of us.

No, I do not think that we need all those guns---I also think that the Bill Of Rights has to be amended.  Times were totally different when the Constitution was written and ratified.  Back then man needed weapons not only to defend his land, but also to defend himself against wild animals that roamed around everywhere.  It's not like the animals were in parks exclusively for them---they went everywhere when they were hungry and attacked.  I do not believe that the framers of the constitution ever thought that America would be a society that has guns everywhere, even in schools.  

I truly believe that we would have a much lower murder rate, and a lot less violence in schools if we could ban guns or at least restrict them to only certain groups of people.

i used to think no but a year ago someone had broke into my neighbor's house and tried to rape the 5yr old girl and her older brother shot him, imagine what would've happen, but then again there is so much violence in this world it would be nice to see whats its like with out guns, see if the crime rate would go down
