  1. If you beat your head against the wall long enough, it sure feels good when you stop - even if you are still in your cell.

Eventually, all people will be free and independent - even the Chinese are slowly realizing the benefits of private ownership and capitalism.

  2. No, I don't think they are happier.  As bad as things seem here in the USA right now, they still don't have the freedoms we take for granted.

I don't think the fact that they have no control over the government and their lives, makes them happier or worry-free.  It makes me happy not to be a citizen of China!  = )

  3. By asking the question, I sincerely hope you aren't so naive as to think that people may be happier in such tyrannical governments.

As for happiness, people are most happy when they are free to do as they wish. Having no control over a government means that the government has a control over the populace. In such a case, to maintain control, the government has to be strict in its control over the population. Control needs to be maintained in finance, home life, religion, etc.

If your life's course was set in stone by other people, how happy could you honestly be?

One example is shown constantly on these answers, especially those having to do with politics. Many politically left leaning people feel the Bush administration is tyrannical. They aren't happy at all. Consider how they'd feel were they to experience real government control, such as the true political prisoners held in China.

In short, happy? I'd bet not.

  4. A recent study (i read it in a newspaper, don't ask me for a link) showed that chinese people are among the happiest in the world. They see a bright future for themselves and don't really care if a few thousand troublemakers out of a 1.3 billion population are rotting in a cell. Who needs democracy when you have food on the table?

Far more individuals are rotting in a cell in the US (several millions) just for  smoking pot. The horror...

  5. Think of it like this: Ignorance is a bliss.

The lesser you know, the happier you are.

  6. No, if you look at studies that show who the happiest countries are in the world, it tends to be socialist countries where people control the government that give the people welfare programs, NOT communists where the people  have no control in how the government controls them.
