do you think people are incredibly dependent?... like how when they wake up, they have water, electricity, food (which they bought)... if there was no electricity... they depend on the electrician, when something breaks they phone everyone... looking for someone who will come and fix it, what would happen if they tried to buy food and the shelf's were empty, or there was no fuel for their car... an individual person is defenseless (in my opinion) if any of these things happen... we are dependent on the gas company, shops and stores, mechanics, phone companies, retail and sanitation, TV companies, internet provider and manufacturers... some people might be able to live on their own... but i think we depend on the economy around us to survive... the more modern the world becomes... the more useless the individual person becomes... your opinion please =D (from all that i probably sound like an old guy complaining... but im 17 ; ) )

  1. By evolution, cultural and biological, humans are incredibly dependent on  each other.  To think that humans are "independent" is a misnomer, we are more independent than other cultures but we have a degree of connectedness that exists no matter what.

Dependence on material things has made humans unable to feel self-sustainable but, with a changing economy, this may begin to change.  Things like television are not essential to existence, even the computer that I am typing this on is a non-essential piece of equipment.

You assume that without modern amenities somehow we cannot exist but this is not true, people will have to begin a shift towards a different lifestyle is all.  This may be tied to a shift in more communal style living, like small towns where people work together to achieve goals more often.

However, we will have to see what happens within the next century to see what influence this shift will have.

  2. Not if they are plumbers, electricians, etc.

  3. We become dependent on whatever we are used to.

  4. Everyone makes fun of rednecks but we are very resourceful. We are not dependent on anyone. When things get tough we can kill, grow and catch our own food. Fix our own things, protect ourselves. make our own clothes. So we are not dependent and as the song says a country boy (or girl) can survive.

  5. Yeah, we're dependent. I live in modern society and am used to modern conveniences. I don't want to camp out somewhere for the fun of it and be miserable. You're going to find that the older you get the more dependent you'll become, on other people, on medication, on whatever it takes for you to get around. I'ved worked in nursing homes and my parents are in their second childhood.
