  1. Maybe if we could require regular testing after a certain age. Many 80 year olds do very well,....other not so well.

But I do support a law to keep dangerous drivers off  the roads- whether they are 80, 40, or 20.

  2. The thing about older drivers is that there reflexes just aren't as fast as when they were younger. That being said, there are quite a few elderly drivers (including octogenarians) who are still capable of holding their own on the road.

One issue that I think gets overlooked in the "elderly drivers are dangerous" debate, is the fact that many older drivers follow the rules of the road exactly as they are. This conflicts with the seemingly popular choice of younger drivers to do what's "convenient" even if it is dangerous (i.e. cutting off other motorists, merging without signaling, turning in the wrong lane, etc). For someone who is doing the right thing (be they elderly, young, or middle-aged) on the road, it's a bit disconcerting to have to react to other drivers' blatant disrespect for the rules of the road, which can be potentially in the case of motorists who have a diminished ability to act in a timely manner.

Despite the capability of many retiree motorists, there are still many out there who should not be on the road. This is why I think it should be mandated that everyone, regardless of age, should re-take their drivers license test every 3-5 years to make sure they are still competent behind the wheel.

  3. As long as they have all their faculties, then why not?
