  1. Absolutely.  We only hear about the stuff that gets to the media.  Everyday somewhere across this world is a scary moment, whether in the air, on the tarmack, taxing down the runway, or loading and unloading at a terminal.

Have you ever watched the show "Airline"? It's on Direct TV every day.  Try looking online for air crashes, near misses, airport terminal problems.

  2. All the time.

  3. more likely you hear scary things from pilots that never really happened. somehow we have to fool you into believing we're special. so we make stuff up. you'll know it when he begins with "no S**t, there i was......."

  4. Yes Without even the tiniest shadow of doubt

  5. Yeah, I bet.  We were coming back from Ireland to O' Hare and our rather unintelligent pilot landed on a taxiway instead of a runway.  Luckily there were no other aircraft on it at the time. Haha.  We only noticed because my dad and I fly alot.

  6. Pretty sure they do but I'm happy in my ignorance

  7. There are certainly moments that the public doesn't hear about, but pilots don't think they're scary at all.  They're usually more like minor inconveniences.  Some non-pilots might think of them as scary though (and thus why you don't hear about them).  When I was in the airlines, I usually didn't talk about the things that went wrong to my family and friends.  Again, to me they were no big deal, but non-pilots sometimes don't understand and blow it out of proportion.

Things break and pilots make mistakes.  Whenever a problem comes up, we deal with it and move on.  If it doesn't affect the passenger's safety or comfort, then they usually don't need to know about it.

  8. Yes but sometimes the passengers know something the pilots are not sure of. For example in England a Boeing 737 crashed because when one of it's two engines malfunctioned and  caught fire. The pilots thought it was the right engine so they turned it off and told the passengers so. The passengers knew that the left engine was the one on fire but no one told them. The  plane crashed only a few hundred metres from an airport . Most survived but the crash would have been avoided if the stewards had told the captain that he might have made a mistake.

  9. Yeah, we do all the time especially when we get on Yahoo answers and get really involved and...... Oh c**p....... sorry, missed the landing strip gotta go......

  10. Right, John.  It's important to our collective public image that everybody thinks we're superhuman.  Faster than a speeding bullet...  Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound...

Actually, we're all just mild-mannered reporters for a great metropolitan newspaper.

  11. Absolutely, however for me they usually occur on I-95 on my commute to and from the airport.

In today's era of wall to wall news coverage and of course " You-tube" Most if not all notable scary moments in aviation end up in the public domain.

Also through the F.A.A. and or N.T.S.B. information concerning all aviation accidents and incidents serious enough to potentially affect the safe outcome of any flight, are published and available to the public.

Enjoy your flight statistically it is the safest mode of transportation.

  12. bbfan129 you are completly full of sh**.  There is no way in holy h**l you are going to get away with landing on a taxi way at O'hare one of the busiest airports in the world.  Wow what a total d-bag you are.  If you and your dad knew anything about flying you would know that you get vectored to all the way to final and you have to maintain seperation that is pretty close at an airport like that.  Thanks for the BS answer Dumb A**.  Now to answer the question.  Yeah things happen that are maybe not life threatning, but could cause you to pucker up a little.  Also remeber that smaller airplanes and helicopers crash on a daily basis and we never hear about them unless you live in the town where it happens.  There are also non fatal incidents that happen every day.

  13. yup we all do
