Question:

Do you think police officers should have less authority?

As a son of a lawyer, and someone who will be driving in around four years, I have given this question some thought.

What bothers me is that your typical rowdy classroom troublemaker becomes a police officer. The idea for law enforcement was created for the soul and obvious purpose of enforcing the law. But are they fully aware of what the law is? Have they ever read the constitution in part or in whole?

The answer to these questions appears to be no. Because I really don't want to be pulled over for speeding and then having a cop lecturing me out of ignorance on the law. And do you know what the worst part is? From my dad's defense attorney perspective on the legal system, it appears as the prosecutor believes the cop's story, and the judge believes the prosecutors story, etc.. As my personal opinion, I just cannot accept that police officers have this much authority, as seeing there are no exemplary requirements for becoming one. What is your opinion on this matter?

  1. "As a son of a lawyer,"

Sorry to hear that! But that would explain the laundry list of incorrect assumptions you have made regarding Police Officers.

Simple solution for solution for you anxiety of being stopped for speeding, don't speed and drive normal and you have a problem.

Have I read the Constitution? many times. Along with the many State and Federal appellate decisions and ruling as well as US Supreme Court decisions that affect me in how I do my job. How about you?

If your dad has that point of view, he must not be a very good attorney.

  2. this is what we call Marshall law  and soon this will mean that they will have more authority then you ever thought people don't have rights anymore in America we have privileges

  3. Of course the DA believes the cops' story.  They are the ones that subpaena them(cops) to testify first.  Why doesn't your dad subpaena the cops?

"Because I really don't want to be pulled over for speeding and then having a cop lecturing me out of ignorance on the law. "

This is easily prevented by not speeding.

What bothers me is that your typical rowdy classroom troublemaker becomes a police officer."

Not true.  Some of the shyest kids have gone on to become cops.

  4. Son of a lawyer?!  Haha that explains why you are so biased and WRONG on your opinions of police officers. If you don't want to be pulled over for speeding, then DONT SPEED!  Its that simple. Oh, and in regards to being a bully in high school, I was Athlete of the Year, Voted Most Popular, Valedictorian, all while having a 4.0.  Sound bullied to you??

  5. I've been around law enforcement my whole life so I will give you some of my opininos and views. Most "your typical rowdy classroom troublemakers" do not become police officers. These guys are the ones who usually go in and out of jail. I'd say cops get a rather good education on the law because well we ARE dealing with it on a day-to-day basis. The constitution, from my personal viewpoint, kinda outlines the way the country is set-up, the process of our laws, and the division of branches. You won't get pulled over for speeding unless you are speeding. A lecture on ignorance of the law would probably help seeing your opinions on the judicial system; some facts would not hurt. Over the course of time I have seen the law enforcement officers slowly lose some authorities and it is authorities they should not have lost. In my opinion they either need to gain back some authorities or stay where they are at. As for you and your way of thinking I see that you say you still have four years till you drive so I guess you are still fairly young. Within this time you may realize some things you currently do not.

  6. "Because I really don't want to be pulled over for speeding and then having a cop lecturing me out of ignorance on the law. "

Simple solution - don't speed. Obey the law.  Duh!

    "smart alich"

Did you mean smart aleck? That's not what he's doing at all, that's what you are doing.

  7. maybe you should become a cop, since you know the law so much more than the police officer.

  8. i believe there should be more restrictions on becoming a police officer including education and emotional stability requirements.

i also believe there should be an ENTIRELY separate group who investigates police officers with complaints brought against them, not just another branch of law enforcement.

i also think 'quotas' for highway patrols are ridiculous.

  9. So do you think it would be better to have some candy *** little whiners be cops with no authority?

Two kinds of people become cops & criminals...them that likes the chase (cops) and them that likes to get chased (criminals).

Apparently you have an EXTREMELY biased view of the police and just what it takes to be a cop.  It's a little more than pulling over speeders...  There are a very few rotten apples out there, but compared to the huge numbers we're talking about, they are a tiny sample of the group.  We just hear about them ALL THE TIME because the media uses these stories to sell their news papers.  OF COURSE THE PROSECUTERS BELIEVE THE COPS!!  Do you think the criminals don't lie?  The odds that a cop even needs to lie to get a conviction are miniscule because most criminals hang themselves!
