it seems unfair to me that not all kids in the u.s. are receiving the same education as those living in different states. i live in new york and people who would move here from the south would be placed a grade or 2 below where they should because they could not pass the states regents standards. so would you agree to give the federal government more power for equal education or just leave it to the states?

  1. Every time a school system wants to introduce some fool thing, like not teaching evolution, it's always a state or local school board responsible for it.  I can't see how a national curriculum could do worse than what those bozos have been up to.

  2. No, no, no! The school system is already a disaster. The last thing it needs is more government interference. Parents need to have more freedom in which schools to send their kids to. Then the public schools would have to improve their pathetic performance to keep up with the private schools. Not sure if vouchers or education tax credits are the best answer, but something has to be done. If I had a kid, I would homeschool just so my kid had a chance of being a semi-intelligent human being who could spell his name when he graduated high school.

  3. Education based on demographics.

A one size fits all agenda may not address the needs of the communities.

I am all for federal funding, but I am not in favor of strict federal guidelines.

I understand your reasons, yet we still need to leave it up to the states and local demographics.

  4. No, it was only supposed to be state run.  The federal government is gaining way too much control .. much more than originally intended.  Whatever happened to the checks and balances?  Now the states and the People are intimidated by the federal government.

  5. Leave it to the states.  I'm no fan of government control, which is basically what you're asking for.  Our children are being brainwashed enough by liberal teachers, we certainly don't need the government dictating what opinions are allowed to be taught in school a la Communist China.  That leaves too much control for propaganda.

  6. I've always said leave it to the States. I mean come on would you want Bush telling you what education you need? lol.

  7. You'd need an amendment to the constitution for that to happen. Article 10 says, basically, that anything not covered in the constitution is the responsibility of the states and education isn't in there.

As to your example, I taught in a Catholic school for 8 years before going to public. Any public school student who transferred in would be put a year behind because that's how deficient they were. By contrast, I had a student who transferred in from a school in Nicaragua and was placed a year ahead of his age because he already knew what they were teaching in his grade level, even though he couldn't speak English. In the first reading class I had in public school, there was a girl who was a better reader by far than all the others in the group of 27. She had transferred in from Catholic school.

  8. Have we all forgotten NCLB? The feds already give money on several different levels.

I think their should be national standards. In my state, there aren't even state standards, standards are set by individual school districts.
