Definition:

The pupusa is a popular Salvadoran dish made of a thick, corn tortilla filled with anything from meats to cheeses to refried beans to pork rinds to lorroco and vegetables. They are usually eaten with curtido which is sliced/cut up cabbage, soaked in vinegar, and other spices. They can be purchased from pupuserías, as well as streetside vendors. Pupusas are also found in certain areas of Guatemala and Honduras.

  1. Never ate one. I do like Taco Bell bean burritos and Pizza Hut veggie lover's pan.

  2. I first discovered Pupusas when I moved to the Mission District of San Francisco, which has quite a few Salvadorean restaurants.  One of the best was near my house and when I observed lots of other diners eating them, I ordered them.  I fell instantly in love them; I like them "revueltos," which means with pork and cheese inside.  I ate them almost every night for months, but I especially like to put lots of red chile sauce on top becuase I added the cabbage.  What a great dish!

However, the best dish I ever tasted was probably the first time I had fresh fish tacos in La Paz (Baja, Mexico).  The fish had just come in off a boat and the tacos were served with a few "fingers" of fish that had just been quickly fried, a few slivers of raw white cabbage, very hot green salsa, and a white spread that tasted a bit like mayonnaire with lime juice.  They cost 25 cents each and were heavenly.

  3. pupusa is good, but baliadas better.

  4. yes

  5. As Honduran I eat them very often....And of course they are delicious !!!!!!
