Question:

Do you think "British" beer should be 3% alcohol, like the U.S.?

I understand that the British "enjoy" their pints. Not that there's a problem with that; but the U.S. sets examples the world over. Maybe the Queen's subjects would be better off if they followed a "Great Leader".

  1. The example set is a bad one, when will they stop interfering?

  2. 3% beer; perish the thought. Life wouldn't be the same without having a hangover in the morning!

  3. No, everyone and every country should be free to set their own standards.  If Britain prefers stronger beers, that is their business.  I like a good English ale once in a while too.

True alcoholics wont be deterred by this, they will just drink more, so if that was your intent, that will not solve a problem.  Trust me, I have had too much experience with alcoholics like my father to know they will just drink more.

  4. We already do follow a great leader...that would be Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

You ought to try some of our "real ale"...that would put hairs on your chest...whether you wanted them or not!

    Edit

    You are welcome!

    God Save the Queen!

  5. Who wants to sup American pisswater

  6. No, I think British beer and ales should be whatever the public wants.  They should offer some at the same level as the US but not be mandated by law into doing so.

  7. Please no, why would anyone want to drink American beer which is not brewed, but tastes like it has been put together by some chemistry student in a mega factory somewhere near Minneapolis?

American beer is derived from German and Czech lagers which can be quite nice but in the U.S. they have lost all taste and character (and come in tiny bottles). British beers have much more depth, Our equivalent to a larger is an Indian Pale Ale (IPA). We also have Bitter which can range in taste and colour from a light golden brown to a dark thick beer. We have Mild and Stout which usually have less alcohol, Brown ale is nice, and we have Porter, which Guinness is the best known.

I haven't even mentioned Cider which is popular at the moment.

Alcohol content is not the primary guide to a good beer but taste is.

Try some good British beers like Fursty Ferret, Wobbly Bob or Theakstons Old Peculiar that taste wonderful, but be very careful because they are strong.

  8. Most regular US beer (not the wimpy light stuff, which is around 4.2% ABV) is around 5 ABV.
