Do you think "Memories are forever" is a good quote to live by? How could you live by it?

The statement does not apply to those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease (or people close to these victims).  The victims struggle with almost every moment depending upon the severity.

Also, take into consideration the many brain-damaged people that have portions of their brains permanently removed for whatever reasons.

I would say ---Memories are important -- Every Bad one teaches us and helps us grow and every good one gives us a reason to keep growing.
