  1. No, definitely not. In elementary school, I wasn't allowed to use a calculator at all, and although it was frustrating to me at the time, I think that doing math with electronic aids has allowed me to strengthen my basic math skills (ie simple multiplication, division, arithmetic, etc.). Doing math without calculators allow students to fully grasp how mathematical concepts work. If they simply type a question into their calculator, students cannot learn math concepts the way that other students without calculators can. As students further pursue their academic careers in high school, they'll find that this basic knowledge of math concepts is absolutely essential. For example, I had one fellow student in my math class last year who would always type questions into his calculator.... and often get them wrong... while the rest of us solved them on paper or mentally. If individuals don't understand basic math principles, they will find that as they enter higher grades in math, they will have difficulty with orders of operations, etc (like my fellow student) when using a calculator. No, students in elementary school should not be allowed to use a calculator for math.

  2. i say no until they are in middle school

    no because they ave the easiest homework and should learn that the stuff isnt always just a calculator

    :DDDD

    D;;;

  3. i used one in 8th grade and all it did was speed up time on tests.... but i still feel as if i know nothing....

    my cousin who is a year younger than i am is good at calculating large and difficult numbers in her head because she didnt use a calculator until high school..... as for me i'm only good at math as long as i see the problem i cant do some math in my head

  4. no, because they will get accustomed to not adding things in their heads or on paper. it happened to me and i did not get to use a calculator until highschool!

  5. I think that they should be taught how to use the functions on the calculators, but prohibited from using them constantly.

    We cannot let them depend on calculators.

    I've seen high school students that must use their calculator to calculate the product of 6 and 3.

    My opinion:

    Elementary school math teachers teach the students to know how to use the functions on the calculator, but rarely let them use calculators.

    I think they should only be brought out when taking tests.

    They cannot become dependent on calculators, because if calculators are not allowed on a test they take in the future, they'll be in a situation there..

  6. Elemetary school math students shouldn't be allowed to use calculators. All throughout elemetary school I had to learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide by hand. Even In 6th grade I remeber learning how to do long division by hand. I think calulators should be used in like 7th and 8th grade. If students in elementary school don't know how to do math by hand that is gonna be a serious problem. By doing math using a calculator it doesn't sho you know how to actually solve the problem yourself. using a calculator is a convenience.

  7. No, it doesn't encourage kids to use their heads. By using their brains, they actually learn the basic arithmetic skills, which is why they're really in school, right?

  8. Not all the time. We were when I was in elementary school and I really suck at math. I think they should be allowed to use them for  difficult topics tho.
