  1. This is a lot more complex than it may appear. Obviously, we want to stop reckless developing. Obviously, we want to stop deforestation, and this may be a way to do it. But at what cost?

A lot of these countries do not have a lot of opportunities for the poor. If timbering is the only way someone can put food on the table and a roof over their head, and you cut that off, how will they live? This kind of situation reminds me of a news article I read about a small, provincial island that was "encouraged" to stop timbering and fishing, and to keep the area more pristine for nature. In exchange, the area could become a tourist attraction, and they'd make money that way. Guess what? The tourist attraction thing fell through, and these people have gone from provincial to downright destitute, and regret ever making any such deals.

I guess the point is yes, protect the environment -- but make provisions for the little guy whose livelihood depends on such actions.
