I also had my doubts about this as cricket was created on patriotic lines in my opinion. It thrives on its build-up of history and it matters (or at least I like to think that it does) for its uncanny way of capturing something of a nations identity in the unique ways each region interprets it. International cricket is immense because of the intense competition between patriotic and highly skilled performers who proudly represent their countries. Can players rekindle this fire and desire to win for a team that doesn’t have the same meaning? Well judging on the performances so far, it seems like they are able to, which is a great sign seeing as I am actually a fan of the IPL. However I do fear that players may only be playing with this type of spirit because of the huge amount of money involved, and that for me is not what cricket (or any sport for that matter) should stand for. This may just be my view because don’t get me wrong, I love twenty20 competitions, however I can’t help but liken the whole format to chewing gum. A big initial hit on the senses, but ultimately unsatisfying when compared to Test cricket. I think that’s just my traditional roots showing though! :)

It is mandated that all players show the spirit of the game. We

do not need to be cherry picking anyone, but overall the Spirit

of the game is more important than individual players.
