taxpayer money? I'm not from England. I don't particulary care either way. Just wondering what you think.

  1. The British royal family brings in more profit than what taxpayers are putting in all together. A major part of the tourism industry depends on the royal family and their numerous private estates and castles, which are all partially opened to the public and tourists (such private assets are made out as loans to the British parliament and the monarch receive payment for such transactions).

If the royal family were to be removed, the Queen could withdrawal and take back many of her royal properties and assets, which could hurt the economy in the long run.

  2. No they obviously don't "need" them....it's all for show.  Lucky sons of b*****s.....their famous and stinking rich from their family's history.  One pretty dam impressive history.  I just wish I could see alot less of them though....to much drama where it isn't needed.  If they want to be in the spot light...they should be their for a real reason.  Start running the country or start a war....do something for Christ sake.  Sometimes I love them and sometimes I cant stand them. I wish I lived thousands of years ago....when life was a lot simpler...sort of I guess.....I'm way of topic now....what were we talking about? :)

  3. It is all just for decoration. The English, (no offense) tend to be stuck up and snotty so they want everyone to think, "Wow, they have a Queen." It is all just decoration. They don't really rule anyway. They have a parliament that do that for them!

  4. i think it's a grand tradition and one that England should be very proud of. if monarchs of other countries were as good, maybe the world would be a better place.

  5. The Monarch is the living embodiment of the State. She connects us to our past, our present and our future. She remains the contact of last resort if we feel wronged by government.

Every country needs a head of state, and I think there is an elegance to having one who is born into and trained for the position. The Queen knows how to act and behave, she doesn't need people whispering in her ear. And because she is separate from politics, we don't have the same level of crises if there is an embarrassment like the antics of a Princess Diana or a divorce. The Queen would never be involved in something like the Watergate break ins or funding arms for Latin American terrorist organizations.

And finally, as another poster mentioned, a monarchy is good business. Britain earns over 85 billion pounds a year from tourism - do you think people would flock to a cold, rainy country without a monarchy? The taxpayer pays some for the upkeep of the monarchy, but they earn more than that back from the money The Queen has the royal estate turn over to the Exchequer.

She is both good government, good for the people, and good for the economy.

  6. It's the United Kingdom, not just England. The taxpayer pays less than one pound a year in tax towards the royals and they bring in much more than that in their own tax from tourism and their own businesses. The Queen is much better than President Brown...

  7. Australian born and bred, lived in the UK for years, and I am proud to be BRITISH and of course we need and want the royal family .. it protects us from the stinking corruption that is republicanism such as USA where you can only be the big boss if you are filthy rich at others expense .. the royals cost next to nothing and return countless billions

  8. more than  anyone needs a president or prime minister,
