Question:

Do you think that Margarito can unify ALL the welterweight titles?

I mean I was just thinking about it and to me the toughest opponent in the division was Cotto. Williams beat him, but please don't come on here and tell me he hurt him. In fact, any one who saw the fight knows that it was Williams that was in trouble late in that fight. As far as Clottey, I think he suffered some type of injury again during the Judah fight (which was BORING) and I don't know how effective he will be when he comes back against a big welter like Margo. I must admit that I don't know much about Berto, but considering that I had never heard of him until he won the title vacated by Mayweather, I'm guessing he can't be THAT good.

Am I wrong? I mean I'm not saying that it wouldn't be hard for Margo to do it, but I legitimately think that he CAN do it. What do you guys think?

  1. Yeah, I think in a rematch hw will beat Paul Williams, Margarito could take a punch!

  2. the 147 pound division is wide open now, and anything can happen.

so it would be nice if a unification took place to clear up the division.

  3. On paper, of course Margarito could unify the division, but what is now considered unified? Before it was just the WBA & WBC, then in the mid eighties Larry Holmes gave the IBF some credibility when he ditched his WBC belt and allowed the IBF to recognize him as World Champ. Now the WBO is the newest player, so you pretty much have 4 sanctioning bodies organizing the sport and they all want their share of the pie, so the likelihood of a unification series is remote, at best, and near impossible in reality.

Margarito is as tough as they come, but let's give Cotto his just due. He's basically in no man's land in the fight game. Too big for a lightweight, unable to make jr. welter, and really too small for a true welter(as the Margarito fight showed). The beating he took reminds me of what happened to another great Puerto Rican fighter who ventured too high in weight and had his butt handed to him by the late, great Mexican superstar Salvador Sanchez, that being Wilfredo Gomez. Sure, Gomez went on to some success at featherweight, but was never the same. Look at Fernando Vargas & Melderick Taylor, both took bad beatings early in their careers(by Tito Trinidad & J C Chavez respectively) & never regained their form and were has-beens by their late 20's. Cotto will be fed softies until his confidence as a fighter resurfaces, but I don't think he'll regain his stature as a mega star.

Margarito will now have a more difficult time luring any mega fight deals as the big fight names are either retired(Mayweather), too scared(De La Hoya) or not ready yet(Berto). Paul Williams is actually moving up in weight, so that's why I think not much has been said as to why a rematch with Margarito hasn't surfaced. Clottey isn't a household name & Margarito beat him once already(ok, out-pointed him-lol). You can stick a fork in Judah, Mosley & Mayorga(the latter two fighting soon-hahaha).

  4. He is one of the biggest welterweights and determine fighters in the

    division.

  5. Margarito possibly could unify the titles at welterweight, but his biggest obstacle would probably be Paul Williams. Williams already having the experience against Margarito knows what he is up against and therefore could fight a much smarter fight, if they got in the ring again.

Joshua Clottey has several a few injuries lately, which has me concerned about how far he can go as champion in the division. And Andre Berto, despite being undefeat with a high KO percentage is still a little green in my opinion. I don't think he would be ready to fight someone who would constantly come straight forward.

I also think at the same time, Margarito himself, can be his own worst obstacle for acheiving unification. His over aggression could possibly be his own undoing, especially if he was in the ring against a great defender and counter-puncher.

  6. possibly, margarito is looking good at this point in his career

  7. Yes and no at the Same time.... The governing bodies of boxing would never let him to so... i know Margarito can beat all the other fighters out there, with Williams being the wild card, but in order for him to do so he would have to bypass a lot of mandatory challengers and would probably get stripped of his whatever belt he has at the time...Much like the last fight where he gave up the belt Clottey and Judah fought for to get Cottos belt and is a shame that happens but is a neccessary evil in Boxing .... the other thing is even though he can beat the division, with a big question mark on williams, will the other champions still be champions before he gets to them.. And lets not forget that he is probably the least marketable fighter, outside Mexico, and not a lot of people are happy he beat Cotto(their golden boy) and are still making excuses for Cotto than give Tony Credit...my favorite was that Tony was on steroids lol.... but because of this not many people are going to want to put their guy in with Tony and get embarrased like Cotto did without the big time Dollars.... And lets be honest Margaritos name was not the seller in the fight with Cotto so not sure if he can produce the kind of Big MOney fights he wants without another big name like Delahoya being there so he may also price himself out of Big Time fights as well....But to Answer your Question, Yes he can but he wont
