Do you think that Mexican's, Puerto Ricans and Cubans are considered "white"?

Why do most americans consider Mexican's, Puerto Ricans and Cubans "non-white"? Alot of them are of Spanish decent which is Europe.

im mexican-american but im really light skinned probably because of my spanish and french ancestors. i consider myself 100 % mexican-american and NOT white.

because most Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and a large number of Cubans are not of pure European descent

In Latin America, there was a shortage of white women available, since most of the Colonists were men and many women were unwilling to leave their homes in Spain, Portugal and France. Because of this, race mixing was far more common since native american and black women were the only women available.

As a result, although there are European-descended populations in all three of those countries, most of the people there are of Mixed-Race. People of mixed Black-White-Native American blood are predominant in Puerto Rico and even moreso among the Puerto Rican Diaspora (if every puerto rican moved back to PR, the island would be about 55% mulatto). Cubans (still living in Cuba) also are predominantly mixed black and white(mulatto), and most mexicans are mixed White and Native American (mestizo)

It would be ridiculous to assume that all Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans are white. Cuba imported more slaves than the entire United States. Puerto Rico had the highest percentage of free blacks (55%) at one point, and Mexico is 30% Native American and 60% mixed-race

Cuban-Americans are the only exception, since most cubans who came to america were white members of the ruling class that got overthrown by the Socialists. So while Cuba itself is mostly Mixed-Race, the people of Cuban descent living in the United States are mainly white because it was the whites who had the most incentive to immigrate

Yes and No.

Some are White and some are non-white.

They don't all have Spanish ancestry. Countries like Puerto Rico and Cuba did see mass migration from Poland, Italy, Ireland, and other Catholic countries.

Most Mexicans have Semitic and North African (Berber) ancestry not Spanish ancestry. Spain sent a lot of it's Muslim and Arab settlers to Mexico and The New World.

Most Cubans Ive seen in Florida are so White I wouldnt know they were Cuban if it wasnt for them speaking Spanish in there Cuban accents.

Puerto Rico is mostly White. That was a shock for me as the Puerto Ricans I see on the mainland are either Black are mixed. Seems the White Puerto Ricans stay on the island while the non Whites leave.

Most Mexicans I seen in the US were either Mestizos or pure Native.  But when I went to Mexico City I saw a lot of White Mexicans. Same in Guadalajara, however you spell it.

Some of them are white, and some are not. "Hispanic" and "Latino" are ethnic groups, not races, though many Americans don't make this distinction. Because Hispanics are not overwhelmingly one race and are in fact most likely to be of mixed-race descent, it is more common for Americans to refer to them by their ethnicity rather than their race.

Did you know that over one million Cubans are racially black? Just food for thought. Considering them across the board "white" would be like considering all Americans white.

Why Us people mind so much about who is white and who is not? This issue  is beyond me...come on deal with the real!...the largest part of them are blacks, more than any other country on earth ever... plus they are going to have a black President... Do they have already realize it?No I guess....

im from the dominican republic and i can tell you that dominicans are purely a mixture of europeans, africans (who were brought as slaves), and quisqueyanos/ tainos (native peoples of the dominican republic). some dominicans are darker than others, like some are lighter than others. i do not consider the lighter ones 'white', simply light skinned. i believe that the same goes for mexicans, puerto ricans, and cubans.

They only consider the ones who are white "white", like me for example, I'm mexican american and I'm a counted as white but then there is "white non-hispanic" and me and all other white hispanics aren't in that for the obvious reason, we are hispanic.

Some of you are saying things that don't make sense, hispanic whites can be just as white as any other non-hispanic white but is less common. Would a black person who has some white ancestors (which the majority do) be considered not 100% black? No, because people pretty much go based on looks. So if you look white, you are white even if you have some native american ancestry like me.

To the guy giving false information- If mexicans are 50% native american than how is it possible that about 70% of them are mestizos? I don't know where you are getting your infromation, but as far as I know 16% are white and plus the 70% mestizos (who can look anywhere from white to very dark native american) is 86% leaving about 14% which is made up of pure native americans and the "other" group which is mostly people of black and asian descent.

I know here in the New England area we'd consider that Hispanics or Latinos. Because the Spanish invaded South America so long ago and Mexico, Puerto Rico etc are not located in Europe, plus i've been told that they don't speak Spain Spanish but their own mix. So maybe that's why.

like their Italian counterparts their genetic phenotype is closer to that of middle easterners and north africans than that of Northern Europeans (white americans)

Puerto Ricans are between 30 to 50% black african and Cubans have alwyas been considered white. Mexicans are between 30 to 50% native american
