Do you think that Street Sense should've really won the derby?

I don't! I don't think Street Sense was actually that good! Curlin would've wasted all of them horses! He just didn't have a good position in the gate. Street Sense didn't deserve to win the Derby because he is not going to win the Preakness and we are going to have ANOTHER year with out sum1 winning the Triple Crown! I bet if Curlin is entered in the Preakness (which he should be) he will win it. I bet any1 anything! I'm still going for Curlin. s***w Street Sense. I said he was my new favorite horse. Well then he's not no more.

Your thoughts?

  1. Were you watching the same race as everyone else? Street Sense was NINETEENTH going down the backstretch! He flew around the final turn and was still pulling away as he approached the wire! Curlin' had NO excuses! Don't go blaming his post position for his loss. There have been times in the past that a horse that I have chosen to win the Derby didn't but in no way did I bash them like you are with Street Sense! Stop having a five year old temper tantrum and realize that Curlin' did his very best that day. There will be other days and other races! Street Sense was the best horse on Derby day. Period.

  2. This isn't American Idol...OK?

Street Sense crossed the finish line first for crying out loud! Ergo.....He won the race.

  3. Street Sense ran a good, fair race and deserved to win. Even  the owner of the horse in the lead said that. Street Sense also has a good chance to win the derby.  No matter what postition the horse has at the gate...it's up to the jockey to know how to run the horse...to get the horse where he wants him and where he can outrun the other horses and Street Sense has that type of jockey.

  4. Melissa this horse practically worked his way thru the whole field...and that after only two preps this year, the horse should move forward...as should Curlin, but with the field they have assembled for the preakness, Hard Spun is going to be tough at the shorter distance( on the more speed favoring Pimlico surface) , and If Street Sense moves forward like I think he will he is going to be very tough...he beat Curlin who had better position throut the race by 8 lengths, and seemed to have another gear from the top of the stretch down to the wire...Curlin will be lucky to be in the money in the preakness... (btw I was lucky that Curlin did run third, if he hadnt I would have missed that trifecta...didnt have wild n crazy in the third spot of my tickets)

  5. What did Street Sense do that he "should" not have won??  Curlin DID NOT waste all those horses.  Even if Street Sense lost, Hard Spun finished ahead of Curlin. Street Sense passed Curlin.  He was 19th!!!

And where if the logic in "He is not going to win the Preakness, so he did not deserve to win the Derby"?

I think 13, or however old you are, is a little young to be worried about horse racing.

Try make up, or Barbi dolls, or softball!!

    :)  Street Sense won!!!!

    Boo Hoo Hoo!!!

  6. such a fickle young girl...  ;o)

Yes, I think Street Sense really should have won...  I know because he did win.  It's not like he cheated or anything.  He was clearly the better horse.  He finished less than a second behind Barbaro's time from last year.  It's not like he was some long shot that was never gonna win again like Giacomo a couple years ago who won only by a half length or so.  Street Sense is proven himself quite a lot.  He beat a great field of horses last year by 10 lengths.  There was some question about his talent and what he could do as a 3 year old, but he made a good return in the Tampa Bay Derby, then showed he had the stamina to bounce back in 2 weeks by winning the Kentucky Derby in stunning fashion after the Bluegrass.

Even if Street Sense didn't win, Curlin would not have.  Hard Spun was much better than Curlin.  I know you think the problem was just Curlin's post position, but the fact is that he broke ahead of Street Sense, he was ahead of Street Sense for the first half of the race.  Curlin didn't get bumped or severely caught up behind a wall of horses...  he wasn't boxed in or anything...  he just wasn't as good as Street Sense or Hard Spun.  He proved himself a lot yesterday.  Having faced nothing special in his preps, running only in a Grade II race in his last prep, Curlin proved he can handle a Grade I field...  but he also proved that there will be no more runaway victories of 12, 10, or even 5 lengths.  While Street Sense proved he can still outrun a field of great Grade I horses, Curlin proved that he can handle a Grade I field, but not in the same stunning fashion as Street Sense.  I don't think it's such a problem that Curlin didn't race as a 2 year old and I don't think it's a problem that he ran only 2 stakes races.  I think the problem was that he didn't face any tough competition.  He chose the Arkansas Derby as his last prep on a day when he could have run against better horses in the Bluegrass.  The only other real contender in the Arkansas Derby was Storm in May, and I was right when I said before than any major KY Derby contender would have run away from that AR Derby field...  I was right because that's exactly what happened in the KY Derby (well except Scat Daddy...  boo!)...  they all finished about 10 lengths in front of Storm in May.  The only other contender that Curlin had faced was Teuflesberg in the Rebel...  and Curlin and everyone else beat Teuflesberg by about the same 5 lengths as Curlin beat him before.  If Curlin had raced better horses, we would have known whether he was for real.  ...  and if he had faced better horses, he might have done better in the Derby.  Your horse was fairly beaten by 2 great horses by quite a distance.  Curlin couldn't catch Street Sense and he had quite a lot of trouble just beating the 17 other horses and I believe he finished within a length of Imawildandcrazyguy.

I don't know if Curlin can beat the Derby field.  If Hard Spun likes the Pimlico track as much as he liked the track at Churchill Downs, it might be that no one can catch him.

I don't know if Street Sense can win the Preakness either...  The Derby answered a lot of questions yesterday...  (1) can a 2yo champ and Juvenile winner win the Derby?  Yes.  (2) can a horse prep just twice in his 3yo year and still win the Derby? Yes.  (3) Can a horse race his final prep on the polytrack and come onto the dirt at Churchill to win? Yes.  (4) Can a horse have a tough test in a hard stretch run, match-race-type duel and still go on to win the Derby? Yes.

And yet questions remain: Can Street Sense win if not given a perfect run along the rail?  That's the major question for the Preakness.  Knowing how Street Sense likes to slide through holes at the rail, the other jockeys in the Preakness might make more conscious attempts to keep the rail closed, thereby forcing Street Sense on a longer track around the outside.

Curlin had no excuse for his loss.  None of the horses in the Derby had an exceptionally difficult trip.  No one stumbled, no one got bumped or seriously boxed in.  Some horses were forced a little wider than others which certainly affected their runs (Scat Daddy was 4 wide for the entire race and was simply too tired to do anything at the top of the stretch).  Some horses got the easy rail trip like Street Sense and Hard Spun.  Some had decent post positions (both Street Sense and Hard Spun) and some were stuck on the outside (Great Hunter) or trapped on the inside (Curlin and Sedgefield).  [note, 3 of the inside 5 post position horses finished in the top 5...  so the inside posts must not have been as much of a handicap as the outside posts (no horse starting wider than 8 finished better than 6th)]  Some get lucky and some don't.  That's just how horse racing is.  Certainly the best horse does not always win...  Even Secretariat and ManOWar lost at some point.  But it's hard to argue with Street Sense's victories against major Grade I horses by these wide margins.  Kudos too to Hard Spun who was still a few lengths in front of the field.  Curlin's a good horse too, but didn't win the Derby...  he can still be your favorite...  but you can't argue with that race...  Curlin just wasn't as good as Street Sense yesterday.

  7. Street Sense won because he was the better horse on the day.   Curlin hadn't faced horses of that quality before, and his inexperience hurt him.  Curlin is a nice horse, but Street Sense proved himself the best 2 year old last year and so far the best 3 year old.

Street Sense's jockey gave him the perfect, distance saving ride, while Curlin spent energy getting through traffic.  Street Sense was by far the better horse on the day, as he proved by his win.

There's no need for anger.  Your favored horse just didn't run as well on the day.  He will have other chances.  There will be several quality newcomers in the Preakness, particularly Chelokee (trained by Michael Matz) and Slew's Tizzy.  It won't be an easy race for any horse.  But then Curlin's not only going to have to get in front of Street Sense, but also Hard Spun who showed he too is the real deal - they both were 5+ lenghts ahead of your pony.

  8. You cannot take anything away from Street Sense, he ran a tremendous race!! Going from 19th to first means he passed 18 horses along the way.

  9. well... i don't really know. i don't honostly think he will win the Triple Crown. so get ready guys, for another year w/o the Crown. but i believe his jockey deserved the win. he was so happy! i felt so happy for him, he was just bawling tears of joy!

i really wanted Curlint 2 win though like u said. i think he would've if he did race as a 2yo so he had more experienced.

now i might be wrong! i mean, who knows! maybe Street Sense will go on to win the Crown! i don't think so though.

  10. From 19th to First going away? Da*n straight he deserved that win, and all the glory that goes with it!

  11. You'd better watch it again.

  12. Curlin has not run with this class of horses before.  Post had NOTHING to do with it.  If he was such a great horse, why did he not win?  Just an average horse at best.  I think we may just have a triple crown winner here.  s***w Street Sense?  Boo hoo hoo.  Just a great trip and then turned on the juice.  I did not have him to win, but it was a h**l of a move.  I bet we never hear of Curlin after this.
