You can not depict reality as it is. It is boring. Writers take  the real life stories and glue together different pieces of reality.

i know it sounds crazy but whenever i read a really good book i always think about things like that. ever since i read the artemis fowl books i've believed that fairies live underground, and when i finished the harry potter books, i would rush to the front door every morning to see if my letter from hogwarts had arrived yet (don't laugh, i was only 12!)

It has been said that there are really only 30 original stories in the whole world, and that all other stories are just derivitives of one of those 30.  A writer draws from his or her personal experience, adds a splash of imagination, and ties it up neatly in a bundle of compelling writing skills.  Truth is often stranger than fiction.
