  1. I think you'll really have to do a proper survey to get any realistic sort of picture. After all you're asking this question on a computer and only people who spend a fair amount of time on a computer are going to answer. You also need to clarify your question. Do you mean kids communicating via the internet rather than in person, or surfing the net or play games rather than hanging out with friends IRL?

Asking it in the HS section is interesting because HS kids can play on their computers for several hours a day and still fit in plenty of good socialization and studying because they don't have to waste the bulk of their days in school.

  2. No. Well, at least not for my kids and the general population as I see it.

Socialization means a continuing process whereby an individual acquires a personal identity and learns the norms, values, behavior, and social skills appropriate to his or her social position.

With that said computers are part of our world.  As are cell phones, ipods, blackberry's and whatever else I don't understand!  LOL!

But seriously, my kids are doing fine and I am okay with using a computer and cell all the time.  We have friends, we go outdoors, we are active in our community and with our family.

We have time and time again been praised for our well behaved, well mannered, socially adept children.  They get along well with their peers, younger children, and adults.

BUT- we do limit the computer time, especially during nice weather, because children need to be TAUGHT not to do anything in excess.

  3. I am homeschooled and I think that the use of computers has helped alot in my studies.  If used contantly for games and other stuff it is wasted but I still talk with friends and get plenty of exercise.  all other homeschoolers I know still socialize and rarly get on computer

  4. I think it would depend on what the computer is being used for and for how long. As an ex home educated child I used to use my computer a LOT, not only for work but to contact other home educated friends (we live in a remote village), I always had friends in 'real life' and would often visit my home educated friends and meet at festivals and such as well... I think its a balance. I feel, and have been told (usually by surprised schooled parents who don't know anything about home schooling) my social skills where exceptional as a child.

It depends on the parents, if a child is guided in the right direction when they are young as they grow up the skills will continue to develop regardless of computer use. Unless maybe they spend their whole time playing computer games, but then again now a dasys most online games have some sort of innteraction betweenm the users?

  5. Yes, It has made our children lazy... We here in the U.S. have the worst education system in the world... Scores are dropping and our kids only talk on line can't face a real person with any issue...

It has also gave way to kids not excising and they become obesity....
