Do you think that genetically modified corn could have the same sterilizing affects on humans as they do on...

...cows and pigs? Many farmers have been suffering financially after feeding their cows and pigs GM corn and other GM feed because many of their livestick suddenly became sterile and were unable to reproduce. One farmer experimented and took his cows off of GM corn and fed them grass instead and they were no longer sterile (infertile)! Do you think that many people eating GM foods and eating meats from animals that were fed GM foods are also affected by the sterilizing effects of genetically modified foods like corn and soy?

Here's a farmer talking about his experience with GM corn (first few seconds of video):

  1. Yes. Genetically modified food has been proven to cause problems in people such as fatigue, depression, and sterility, among others.

  2. If you want to prove that a GM crop causes sterility in mammalian males, you're going to have to do a lot better than a Youtube video.  Do you have any actual evidence?  Studies?  You know, proof?

As for soy, the problem is the natural abundance of phytoestrogens.  The soy effect on male potency has nothing to do with GM.

Edit> Ok, I looked through your article.  Several of those citations are either from non-peer-reviewed journals or are from journals that have low impact ratings.  Some of those citations are to the author's own book.  The few citations that are from actual journals (Journal of Nutrition, Journal of Anatomy) do not support the radical conclusions to which the author comes.  And the article from Journal of Anatomy admits in the article itself that it is a preliminary study (only 12 individuals) with no explanatory mechanism and significant influence from non-feed related factors.

This is not science.  It's junk.

  3. I have no idea and that's kind of scary.  That's one of the reasons, however, that I try to buy locally grown vegetables from known sources (where they are usually heritage veggies).

  4. There is no evidence whatsoever that "GM" crops cause any of the problems claimed here, and no logical mechanism (other than "black magic"!) for them to do so.  Edward O. Wilson (who pretty much invented "ecology") has no problem with GM crops, so neither should you.  Would it not be more useful to focus your efforts on real threats with real solutions you can help address?

This "farmer" clearly has no understanding of how to conduct an unbiased investigation of anything, so he is certain to find whatever he WANTS to find!

Think about it, every fruit, vegetable and meat that you eat from farmed animals is BY DEFINITION "genetically modified" because it is the products of hundreds of years of selective cross-breeding.  There is no such thing as "natural beef" or milk or pork... Cows & pigs aren't "wild animals" and haven't been for thousands of years!
