In the European Union there are 27 Member-States. They have enough power to defend them selves, all together.

Why they have to be members of NATO, which in reality is only an organization/tool for the Foreign Policy and interests of USA ?

Thanks in advance !

  1. No.  I'm not sure if the EU is even a mutual defense pact, I believe they use NATO to cover that part of their Union.  The larger the group that agrees to cooperate for mutual defense the stronger we all are.

I believe the United States will need Europe's help to clean up Bush's messes.  After we bailed them out from their mistakes twice (the two world wars) I think they owe us one.

  2. Yes I do. It's already on its way with the establishment of the EU army and the EU defence minister. And if the U.S keeps making us take responsibility for things without allowing us any part in the decision making then it can only be inevitable, or at least a deterioration until NATO is just like any other minor treaty

  3. As a former employee of NATO and very familiar with the EU and NATO policies, I think a large organization such as the EU and NATO need to define their responsibilities and TAKE ACTION when it falls within it purview - this way the U.S. and other countries like Great Britain can make their contribution through one or both of those agencies instead of "leading the pack" time and time again.

NATO is not a backer of U.S. foreign policy and actions - to the contrary, most of the 27 nations in NATO vote against U.S. actions/proposals - that tells me a lot.

I don't think we should be a divided North America-Europe. We don't need another WWII. I just hope the leaders of the nations in the EU and NATO get together and make concrete policy changes and agreements - FOR ONCE!

  4. NATO has become pretty much useless. NATO was formed as a military agreement. That means that member nations of NATO are supposed to cooperate. The US, however, has competely ignored its "allies" on several occassions, undermining the military cooperation NATO was created to encourage. It would probably be best for European nations to pull out of NATO before the US gets them into a devastating war.

  5. Webcraft, NATO only has 19 member countries. Tsk tsk.

NATO exists to defend Europe, primarly from the Warsaw Pact. (the who? ask the young ones).

Europe has the great luxury of spending very little on defense for the sole reason that they can rely on the US to protect them. If the EU decides they don't want to protected anymore, they are welcome to go it alone. The US doesn't need that headache or expense. Feel free, blokes.

  6. I think the US should drop out of NATO. Why do we need to defend Europe any longer? We've carried the burden of European defense for too many years already and it's time to stop and let them pay for their own defense.

They don't appreciate what we did anyway.
