I mean, let's pretend there is someone who just learns the books, and gets the ATPL, do you think that can happen? With no passion?

  1. Yes, an individual can learn the mechanics of flying just like learning the mechanics of operating a stick shift car. They can do it because there is a need to do it, but that doesn't mean they have to like it.

  2. Passion never struck me as being necessary to pilot a plane.

Maybe it is. But I would have said reflexes and a brain capable of quick and intuitive calculations were needed.

  3. he or she will need passion when it comes down to steering the aircraft from hitting the ground.

  4. You can go thru the basic course and learn to fly well enough to kill yourself!! Why would you want to fly if you're not passionate about it. Do it well if you're going to do it!

  5. First, it's an ATPC, not 'L'.

And I would highly recommend it, but only if there is a passion for flying.  Otherwise, you could find a whole lot of other things to spend your money on.  It's not cheap.  An ATP rating will run you in the neighborhood of $50,000 or more.

  6. No chance at all.

You have to do something in your life that you enjoy, if you don't enjoy it, you will waste your life completely.

You must be 100% devoted to become an Airline Pilot, or any job like that of similar status.

  7. Yes, but why pay 115k for that?

  8. Um yes why not?  But I wouldnt do it if you didnt have a passion for it, its not a career for someone who doesnt enjoy it.

  9. Passion? I don't know, but the word addiction comes up in conversations amongst pilots quite often. Only an addict would spent the time and money, that a pilot spends trying to get his next "air fix".

  10. while one can learn to fly, and even advance through the ratings without passion, it will take far longer than is really necessary, and cost far too much. you really need to have passion if you want to learn to fly.

  11. Impossible.

In fact inmilitary, I know of someone who was rejected as a fighter pilot for the British royal navy because he lacked passion - he passed every other test

  12. Oh, it can happen alright. For an 0300 wake up with an 0530 wheels up, you'd better hope that the guy or gal flying it would actually be excited about being there.

  13. you can become anything you want without passion but to become great at what you become you must be passionate about it! Does this make sense?

  14. hey Thom, the guy is right, it is ATPL; and stands for air transport pilot license... I have no idea why it would be called different.

  15. I did. Passion? I'm great with out it. And if we're talking the US FARs, it's an Airline transport pilot CERTIFICATE. The word "LICENSE" appears nowhere on  my FAA Pilot Certificate. You drive with a drivers license, you fly with a Pilot Certificate.
