  1. It's changed beyond all recognition from when I was a lad, for fans as well as players.  In the players case, there must be some connection to the wages players are paid by their clubs.  Rangers players and those from other clubs have been guilty of withdrawing from national squads yet are then available for the next club game, it can't always be coincidence. Has personal gain surpassed national pride ?

From the fans perspective, I can recall when pretty much the entire nation were aware when Scotland were playing, especially when they played in the World Cup in Argentina, 1978.  Compare the current situation, how many folk know when Scotland are playing next ?  Other than footie fans of course.

I think it's a sad situation in both cases.

  2. I may be wrong here, but i think that being capped for your country must be the most amazing honour, unfortunately i think players worry more about injuries in case it interferes with their contracts with their clubs. playing for your country could cost you your career and all the trappings of wealth that go hand in hand with it.

  3. absolutely no chance.these guys get a chance that most of us would kill to have,to play for the national jersey.to see people pulling out at this stage of the season is crazy, unless genuine injuries.i think there must be too much pressure put on them from the club management as they always seem to pull the strings.it always seems to be only scotland,as all other nations always seem to have the majority of their regulars available.

  4. I can hardly imagine that the English take any pride in an international call up these days as they get much better pay from club soccer and they are c**p as a national side. As they are so c**p as a national side, the passion for the international game has gone (maybe it's been gone since winning the 1966 World Cup)

Typical English, they love living in the past....I mean who gives a d**n about 1966 now? Since then, they've done nothing to earn the overpaid sums they get. I would sooner let the under 13s represent the country.

  5. These days they can afford all those Burberry caps so i don't think they'll bother with a Scotland one.

  6. I think they do still for matches of importance but friendlies etc they tend to stay away with any little niggle.

I have decided this time..watch the thumbs now...that I am going to support Scotland in this world cup cos as you know I cannot bear my national team ..oh and Brazil of course..me being a glory hunter and all that ;-)

  7. i don't think players take international games seriously especially friendly games were they play on a saturday injured for the mid-week international and then ready to play for their club the following saturday

  8. nope.as far as i can tell, most of them pull out of internationals mair often than playing in them.players today couldnae gie a toss
