What do you think? Will we have to tip the undertaker next?

  1. It is definetley out of hand if it was added to your bill.. Ive never heard of that, its pretty rediculous.

  2. wow thats ridiculous.

    15% geez.

  3. You know, that method is becoming INCREASINGLY popular in resturants now. It sucks, but they probably wouldn't have to do this if 1) the waiting ppl would at least act like they deserve it; even if they hate their job, it's their job and not our problem they're too lazy to go out and find a more enjoyable source of income

    2) customers give them a little respect. You know, do not pick over the little things they accidentally do

So, no, don't undertip- 15% is now the average.

  4. If the undertaker is only making 2.13 an hour, I would have NO problem tipping him. Just tell him to take the money out of my pocket because I won't be in a position to hand it to him....lol.

I want to say that a tip should never be added automatically but in some instances it should. For example, Friday night we had a party of 30 come in, they took up 2 rows in the restaurant. That is 10 tables from two different waitresses. They ran the waitresses crazy on refills and bread baskets, they were loud, obnoxious and rude. They stayed for 3 hours and left NO tip! Those two waitresses could have (based on the specific section) made at least 60 dollars each in that time frame, it was dinner time on a Friday and the restaurant was packed.

Look at it this way.... $60.00...

is a tank of gas to get to work for the week.

Is almost 2 new pairs of shoes for a child(ren) (ours go back to school Monday)

    Is a water bill

Is groceries for a few days

So both women (single mothers) got screwed pretty bad that night.  Had they just added the tip when they paid it would have made a  big difference for two people that night. FYI, these two waitresses are very good at their jobs, it was the party not the staff that was at fault!

  5. Yes, it does get extremely irritating at some points. Especially if it was added to your bill. I had a waitress get rude because I only left her one dollar when she brought me a 3 dollar meal. Would she have prefered the 45 cents?

  6. Well it depends on what type of resturant you went to, if you go to a nice resturant, like The Melting Pot, Capital Grill (my favorite), PF Changs (u might not know it)  then i do not find it out of hand.  I ask them to do that now because i go to those kinds of resturants all the time.  But I hope you were going to give them a 15 precent tip anyway, i usually leave at least $10 tip everytime i go to eat.  i dont even care if its at Subway.  But no thats not out of hand.

  7. Well, for decades, the standard tip has been 15%. It should only be added automatically if you have a group of several people, say 6 or more. Otherwise you should complain to the restaurant, so they know it is seen as a negative.

But, I am surprised at some of the answers here.

Tipping $10 at Subway? Wish I had your money! Heck, I get two sandwiches at Subway for that cost.

And at most restaurants, the tip is ONLY added to the bill if there is a party of several people, so the large party that took up lots of room and time would normally have had 15% added. That policy is usually printed on the menu.

And, it is not so easy to go out and get a job. It has been getting more difficult year after year. Especially for folks who have an hourly job in the first place. So a waitress or waiter isn't "lazy" to not get another job. But I do agree that sometimes the wait-people are not deserving of a tip - so in that case, personally, I don't leave one.

  8. Yeah, I think that is ridiculous. A tip is a privilege not a right. If a waiter does a horrible job, then they should not get a tip, regardless of how fancy or how much the bill was for. And I do give a tip, I prefer cash, so that the waiter actually gets it, and does not have to share with their employer. Same thing with a Barber or Hair Stylist.
