McCain seems to be more superstitious then religious. I know it does not have much to do with the real issues but I sense fear and insecurity in McCain.

Yes!  He is sure the right thing will happen when he makes a decision.

One of the two Presidents who is looked up to as someone to emulate, Ronald Reagan, consulted psychics and astrologers- and, yes, both Democrats and Republicans often try to seem "Reaganesque".

Even Bill Clinton consulted astrologers. And, you're worried about a feather and a coin?

I don't think you really see this as much anymore - people carrying around "lucky" items.  I think this just shows how old he is.
