Just as southern India has evolved more slowly than northern India, which has always been a travel route and always developed more quickly, the United States seems a little backwards with respect to being really in touch.

I know we think we are the cat's whiskers, but I have noticed in my travels that we whistle a lot to ourselves about how important we are to the rest of the world, and how we are the frontrunners in cultural developments, but..... it simply is not so. Lotta places are more advanced than we want to admit to ourselves, I have noticed .... in my travels I have noticed a HUGE difference between our attitude towards our own importance in the world, and our real importance....so, why don't we just love ourselves, stop talking so big, like such children, and take our place with the rest of the world. After all, we are about 250 years old, so isn't it time we were grown up ?

  1. I think that you are right. Historically, the United States has been isolated from the rest of the world. It only participates when there is no other options (just like in the case of WWI or 11/9) or when there is need to reassure its imperial role in the world. Its geographic position of course has allowed the USA to be isolated and unharmed from the rest of the world (with the 11/9 crucial exception). The consequence of that is that its population has become increasingly ignorant about the rest of the world. And we all know that ignorance is mother of nationalism and arrogance. This situation has not been worse simply because there are so many immigrants in the USA (coming from countries where they cannot get a good job or where other calamities exist) that are mitigating a little bit this tendency.

  2. The geographical position does not isolate USA from important cultural influences, but the political position based in the military power isolate USA from important cultural influences. Media and books have the responsibility of the negative attitude toward  accepting influences from other cultures.

  3. No, the United States has MANY cultures.
