I hope not but when it comes to the human kind you can never be sure. The book didn't say that it was a nuclear disaster, but it hinted at it, and we do have enough nuclear weapons for some nut head to blow us all off this planet. So that's a possibility. There is also a possibility that we will be struck by a huge asteroid in the future since it has happened before, that too could create the tribulation.

In the book it's Christian fundamentalists but if it happens in reality it could be any kind of fundamentalists. The scary thing with fundamentalists is that they can do anything, even the most horrifying things without blinking because of what they believe in.

Still I hope that the human kind will be smart enough to make sure that it never happens.
