To be fair there should be a Masters Series event that should be played on grass. Other surfaces hard, carpet and clay there were masters tourney held on them.

  1. Although this is a great suggestion, it is impossible to get a Masters Series Event on Grass because the grass court season is so small (only 4 weeks). The gap between French and Wimbledon is only 2 weeks and it is not practicle to squeeze in a Masters Series Tourney in this small gap.

The only way they could get a Masters Series event on grass is if they increase the gap between French and Wimbledon to more than 2 weeks and we all know that is not happening any time soon.

  2. i completely agree with you.

there is this whole history surrounding wimbledon and grass and the atp definitely needs a masters event on grass.

  3. One of the existing events like Queens could be turned to a Master's event as almost every top player normally plays there.

  4. Yeah there should. The Atp needs some serious changing.

  5. Yes, definitely!!

The grass court season and clay court season should be for an equal amount of time. These are how many tournaments are played on each surface:

    Hard: 5

    Clay: 3

    Carpet: 1

    Grass: 0

This is what I think it should be:

    Hard: 4

    Clay: 2

    Carpet: 1

    Grass: 2

That's my opinion, I don't think it's fair on the grass court specialists, they clay court specialists have a much better chance of being higher in the rankings because they have  a greater chance of winning more points. Take Nadal for example, he often wins the clay court tournaments - if they didn't have so many I don't think he would currently be in the number 2 position. There are also a lot of Europeans who are raised playing tennis on clay court - i think that also gives them an unfair advantage.

I think grass is a surface that would attract a big crowd, grass is a famous tennis surface. Even amongst people who don't watch tennis. Wimbledon is also a very famous tournament- yet it has no other ATP tournaments for players to play before hand.

Personally I think it's stupid and if I made the decisions I would definitely put at least 1 or 2 grass court tournaments in the series. There are tournaments on all the other surfaces - it's not fair for the players or the fans that enjoy watching tennis on grass (like myself).

I'm glad I'm nt the only person who hates that there are no grass tournaments =]

  6. There should be.  I hope the organizers of stella artois/ halle and the atp could talk this over upgrading one of this events into a masters tourney.

  7. there should be a masters series on grass... and extend the grass season because it pales when compared to how many hard court and clay court tournaments there are..

  8. You'll have to wait for changes to be made, since major ones are being made next year first.  The Masters Series are being changed to being called the ATP 1000s, Monte Carlo will no longer be required, the Hamburg clay court tournament is being replaced by a Madrid clay court tournament, and the Madrid hard court tournament will be replaced by a Shanghai hard court tournament.

  9. Yes, and they need to make the grass court season a LOT longer. Grass court tennis is the bomb and it only gets four weeks a year while clay and hard court rule the calender (you have both going on during grass court season). It doesn't make any sense to have just one manditory grass tourney a year because it means that grass specialists don't get their chance at increasing their rankings like clay specialists do

  10. Def agree. Get rid of one of the clay court ones... but not Hamburg... maybe Rome... and perhaps change the status of Queens to a Masters series event. Thats a great idea.

To oversome the time problem I believe the clay court season should be shortend. I think grass and clay should have seasons equally as long because they are specialist surfaces so the specialists should get equal ops. Hard court is the great equaliser- keep that the same.

  11. Yes I think so. They really do need to extend the grass court season for more than just two week directly after the French Open. If they would extend the season a little bit more then I think it would give everyone a much more fair chance to do great at Wimbledon. There are Masters Series Events in all the other seasons, and with Wimbledon being the most prestigous grandslam I think it should get the same treatment as the others. I fully believe they need to fix the grass court season it just isn't enough time to make the transition from clay to grass.

  12. There definitely should be.

Before I begin let me say that this is an excellent question.  Well done by the asker, you probably weren't the first one to bring this up but they you're the first I've seen so who am I take to make that judgment :-P

I think it is only fair that there be a Masters Series event played on grass.  Up until about a month ago you could have said that it was unfair to Roger Federer to play mutliple MS events on his chief rivals surface (Nadal) while playing none on his own.  But of course that argument wouldn't really be valid since Nadal finally beat Fed on grass... as we all know.  But still, it is only fair to have at least one on grass.

Someone mentioned that it probably couldn't happen unless the gap between Roland Garros and Wimbledon were lengthened.  That's probably true.  The only way I could see it working other than that is for the Queen's Cup, which most top players go to immediately from Paris as a tune-up for Wimbledon a Masters Series event.

Even so, I think the gap should be lengthened.  I always chuckle when I hear, see, or read, the term "grass court season."   "Rafael Nadal started off his grass court season with an impressive win at Queen's Cup."  "Roger Federer looked to get back on track for the start of the grass season after being thrashed by Rafael Nadal in the finals at Roland Garros."  etc.  The "grass court season" isn't so much a season as about a month.  Less actually.  This year.  I believe the finals of Roland Garros were on June 8th and the finals of Wimbledon were July 6th.

I'm pretty sure the grass at the All-England Club could survive another 2-3 weeks into July and then the summer majors would be pretty much evenly spaced.  Roland Garros would take place in late May-early June followed by a 5 week wait until Wimbledon which would last until the end of July followed by a 4 week wait until the U.S. Open in late August-Early September.  :-P It makes sense to me at least.  Of course, in Olympic years things would be hectic, so that would have to be considered as well.

Anyways, yes.  A grass court MS event sounds like a great idea but I think the most realistic chance at it would be making the Queen's Cup an MS event.  Sad but true.

  13. There are still many things that need to be changed in the tennis world, however, we need to focus on our resources too.  We always say that we want this and that, but can we afford it?

A Masters Series played on grass would undoubtedly be a great improvement, but I am just contented now with what there is for I can't afford personally to make improvements at the moment. I'm broke... Is the ATP also broke?
