  1. No.  I think, given the times and the political climate when this was enacted, that it's a marvelous work that hasn't been properly supported in many subsequent administrations.

The need for the act was critical.  What would you have put in it's place?  In a vacuum, prior to the 1970's, look what was happening.  Try to imagine the current landscape if this act had not been realized.

  2. I believe yes.

First of all, it may be true that most of the endangered species we now have are results of our careless actions that pollute and destroy these organisms' habitat. Nevertheless, some species have to go extinct no matter what, regardless to our "humane" actions. Although the habitat is so crucial even to human because that's where we all grow up and live, hardly any regulations really enforces the conservation of those areas. It may have no connection to this, but the homeless problem we have for centuries still exist even we become so "civilized." We can't even take care of ourselves how dare we are to determine that all other species depend on us to save them?

Besides, as I have looked around in my local schools, there are hardly any emphasis on this act or any other acts to help preserve or even conserve the environment. If the adults don't see its importance, then why should kids?

  3. Personally, I like having whooping cranes and bog turtles around. And bald eagles and alligators. The rate of extinction has increased exponentially in "modern" times. While we can't go back to a natural extinction rate, we can certainly avoid fouling up the habitat for some imperiled species. At the same time we are doing this, we are saving entire ecosystems for other plants and animals.
