The Kuna people have an unusual practice of chewing coca leaves mixed in lyme, similar to certain people from Sri Lanka. I was wondering if there is any evidence that this practice is an ancient one. Are there any DNA data that exists that points to a link between the two societies. Are there any maternal-mitochondrial DNA data that supports this?
I had this theory for quite sometime, but the more that I think about it, a certain group of people from SE Asia probably did not go to Mexico in ancient times, rather the practice of chewing the leaves originated with the Kuna (or related peoples) and traveled to Sri Lanka by way of Spanish or European seafarers around the 16th and 17th century, at the earliest.
By the way where are coca leaves native to? Perhaps that can shed some light to my question.
