You don't think we'll become a republic do you (at least not any time soon)? What about NZ and Australia and Canada? It really sickens me that people moan about losing our identity because of the EU but when it comes to our real identify, some people feel we should lose it.

  1. Yes, I think Britain will retain the Monarch.

  2. As an American, I think it is quaint that you all still have a monarchy.  For us Americans, it would be a disaster because we are not much on traditions like that.  We don't even honor our elderly citizens the way we should, let alone a tradition that is centuries old.  When a buildings and houses get old, maybe 40 or 50 years old, they are torn down and replaced with brand new.  It's really sad that we don't honor things like you do.  About the only thing we do to preserve history is to designate historical neighborhoods that have to be renovated to their original condition.  It sure would be neat to have a lot of architecture from 1776, other than the few we have.   I think that Canada will end up being much like the U.S. since we share a border.  NZ and Australia are so far away, that they could do anything they want and get by with it.

  3. I think we should keep our monarchy - who want's to be like America with no culture or history, or like France, who threw her heritage away??

  4. Well to be honest, Scotland will get their Independence VERY soon and after Scotland Northern ireland will follow, hopefully given back to Ireland.

After this i can see England and Wales in a Union.

In this day and age i think Old Empires should Give Back!!

  5. i believe it will end someday and identity some would say that went when Blair was in the Downing st chalet

  6. Ohio Prof, I think its quaint you Americans still keep using Imperial measurements like feet and inches.  Sound patronizing?  I hope so because that is how you sounded with your answer.

I think Britain will retain the monarchy for some time to come unless some unforeseen event undermines its legitimacy.  I think the two best things about the British monarchy are:

    1) Preservation of national pride and identity in a world where people in Western countries are increasingly made to feel ashamed and inferior about their heritage (thanks to the rise of political correctness and multiculturalism dogma).

    2) The Constitutional Monarchy is a superior form of democracy to most forms of republican (presidential) style governments.  The circus that is American politics and electioneering does not represent th pinnacle of democracy and if it did then Al Gore would have been your president after Bill Clinton by virtue of the fact that he received more votes!  The monarchy denies an elected (usually wealthy) egotist from becoming the leader of a nation and trying to mould it to his vision of what it should be.  It keeps some humility in the elected head of government because even though they effectively lead the nation, even they are always reminded they are subservient to someone else, even if only in ceremonial manner.

The monarchy does not conflict with the elected governments and Prime Ministers of the nations where Queen Elizabeth is Head of State because of laws and traditions that prevent her from doing so.  Witness the nature of so many republican governments where either the prime minister is nothing more than a nameless lackey of the presidency or the president is a useless figurehead who is usually a politician who got the job as the result of some party-room deal or cronyism

  7. This American sees the British monarchy as lasting until the Second Coming.   When King Farouk of Egypt was deposed in the 1950s, he predicted that eventually there would be only five kings in the world: the kings of spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs, and England.
