Do you think the Philadelphia Flyers will re-sign Jason Smith, Vaclav Prospal, Jim Dowd, and Jaroslav Modry?

I agree with the 1st responder. They need some youth and or mobility at D. They should try to get Liles or Campell. They should let all of them go and use some of the guys on the Phantoms.

No, no, no and no. They will also not resign hatcher. The Flyers have A LOT of young talent on their team and the defense from Smith, Hatcher and Modry has been shaky at times. Will the looming free angency of Jeff Carter, the flyers will have to find a way to resign him first. The flyers defense struggled in the playoffs so the team needs to add some speed back there, look for them to drop these guy to make room for Carter's salary as well as that of a puckmoving d-man (Campbell or Redden perhaps). They will then give the captain's "C" to Richards. The big slow defenders will no longer win your team a cup. Prospal played well with Briere early but he had a terrible playoff run, it would be better to keep Carter and with the emergence of Umberger, Prospal's services are no longer required. Don't forget that the flyers will also have one extra wing when Gagne comes back to be on the top line with Briere.

I could see them signing Smith for veteran leadership, but his role as an effective defenseman is up for debate.

Prospal always seems to find his way back to Tampa, and I don't see the Flyers paying him what he can get elsewhere.

Dowd and Modry are gone for sure. That money is better spent.

The only one i see maybe coming back ($$$) is prospal, the flyers have good big strong good skating young defenseman who are going to get a shot...

as for pick ups id go with Campbell or Mike Green but green wont be easy as he is a restricted free agent

If they could secure Prospal for cheap, I'd sign him.  It's been well known for a while that Jason Smith is not coming back.  Modry is horrible.  JD was good to have if only for his veteran presence.

Vinny is the only one I'd consider keeping, and even that's a stretch since they have to resign Carter and Umby and whatnot.

Would you want to?  Not one of them showed up in the ECF against the Pens.  Send them packing.

Not a chance. The Flyers don't need any more slow, banged up d-men. So Jason Smith will be allowed to walk, Modry will almost be pushed out the door, Dowd is rumored to be considering retirement and Prospal may price himself off the team for someone that was almost a no-show versus Pittsburgh.

I think they will sign Carter and Umberger first so that no teams can sneak in a over the top offer, then try to get a FA defenseman with more mobility than Hatcher. Which shouldn't be difficult.
