the 'UN' is not a nation. the 'UN' doesn't go to war. A country goes to war.

The UN doesn't go to war. They can authorize a peace enforcement mission under Chapter Seven of the UN Charter to use military force in order to restore the state of things which existed before some act of aggression happened. But, that authorization has to come from the Security Council and the Russian Federation (as a permanent member of that council) has the right to veto any such resolution.

The most memorable peace enforcement missions were Korea in 1950 and the one to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait in 1991.

Nope. Since Russia has a veto right. USA + EU (NATO) will have to take some tough measures.

The UN will be about as effective in Georgia as they were in Iraq pre-2003
