  1. hold on.... the universe is like everything right?? the galaxy is the milky way thing....whatever.... there are like trillions of galaxies!!! but only one universe!

  2. What do you mean?

    Multiverses, Multidimensions?

  3. The Universe is defined as everything that physically exists: the entirety of space and time, all forms of matter, energy and momentum, and the physical laws and constants that govern them.

This definition covers not only the part of the universe that we have discovered but also the area that we have not yet discovered.  Many years ago, people believed the earth was flat and had not yet discovered America.  This body of land existed and was discovered in their future.  The remainder of the universe will be discovered as we find different methods to see or photograph further areas.

  4. sure, but you don't understand the situation.

not a 'picture'... its a painting.

    seriously.

the universe (Uni- meaning ONE or THAT'S ALL FOLKS) is all there is, but just like a landscape painted on a canvas, just because its 'all there is' doesn't preclude the possible existance of OTHER PAINTINGS.

personally, I see the reality as a series of paintings all laid one on top of another by a very lazy curator.  Most of the canvases are blank, but every once in awhile, the curator pulls out a canvas to check on it.  The canvases next to it develope a static charge and if they are blank... BANG (i.e. Big Bang).

  5. It 's a good subject to think now think about it.

  6. The universe is constantly expanding. So in whichever it is expanding into is still a part of the universe. I don't believe it's a part of a bigger picture, when the picture is in itself. I hope that made sense, ha.

  7. Yes. I think there are multiverses.

  8. Yes I do. What that bigger picture is exactly, is well beyond my comprehension. First of all, it appears to be the case that the "Observable Universe" is a tiny part of a much, much bigger Actual Universe. The scales involved are truly mind boggling. Our observable universe might be to the Actual universe as a proton is to our observable universe!!

Of course, that's still talking about "our" universe. The multiverse idea is becoming more and more popular in physics, especially since String Theory (and in particular M Theory) reignited the concept of other dimensions. M Theory implies that our universe lies on a "membrane", floating in hyperspace along with an infinite number of other membranes i.e. other universes.

We may even be able to detect the presence of these other universes with the LHC or other future experiments.

  9. This idea has been tossed around informally for decades, but there is really no reason to believe it.  By the definition of the universe, anything "bigger" would still be part of the universe -- just maybe more that we haven't discovered yet.

  10. Absolutely...but the fact of the matter is you will never know and will drive yourself crazy thinking about it.
