Question:

Do you think the captain should be picked from the front row?

Wales have announced Gethin Jenkins as their new captain. England have Phil Vickery. In the modern game the front row players usually play for about 3/4 of a game. I would prefer the team captain to play all the game most of the time.

  1. Position doesn't matter. It's all leadership skills. Who do you want leading you in the heat of the match?

  2. Should be whoever has the leadership qualities to lead the team.Shouldn't be picked on positions etc etc.

  3. I defiantly believe a front row player can be captain, especially the hooker do to his position on the field and in the pack.

  4. I agree, a captain should be there right to the very end.

A captain can be picked from any position, one that can coach, read and adapt with the respect of the entire team.

  5. I agree with leadership qualities; something the current All Blacks have not had since Sean Fitzpatrick.    I believe the ideal position for a captain is half back because he is able to direct, and drive, his forwards from behind them and hopefully be free of a ruck or maul to direct backline play.

  6. I dont think it matters what position the captain plays but I think it is easier for the captain to be in the forwards or halfback/scrum half.  It makes issuing orders easier when you are always surrounded by the majority of the team.

Almost every single international player can play a whole 80 minutes if/when required.  Just because coaches make "impact" substitutions, doesn't mean that player was dead tired and had to come off the field.

Position doesn't mean that much, it is leadership that is the crucial factor.  This will annoy the Aussie's but I dont think John Eales was a very good player.  Outside the lineout, he was invisible for most of the game, but no one can deny his leadership ability.  He was crucial to the Wallabies during his time.  He was actually worth points on the board for how they rallied around him.

Sean Fitzpatrick was maybe the best hooker of all time and he captained the All Blacks for an eternity and I can count the amount of times he was subbed off on one hand... poor Norm Hewitt sitting on the bench.

Basically, every forward is subbed at various times so I dont think that is a criteria for choosing the captain.

  7. I think it should be the full back. He should stay back there and analyze the whole thing and like a general give orders to the correct men down the ranks, I mean what's the point a general in war would run up front (albeit heroic) and get his butt blown sky high, then he could lead no more... see where I am going with this?

  8. no as they are not in a position to lead
